Role

The Safety Officer role is initially focused solely on partnering with leaders and employees to enhance our safety culture as well as develop and implement environmental, health and safety plans, programs, and procedures for our Wheeling facility. This role will be the Safety Officer for the site. Our goal is to hire a growth-oriented team member who will also take on more in the future by expanding their skills to take on additional projects in our business. This role has no direct reports and will be a direct report to the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully enhance and promote a strong safety culture in partnership with our leaders.

  • Facilitate all day-to-day Environmental Health & Safety program elements throughout the organization to ensure safety, compliance and best practices.

  • Maintain existing internal and external EH&S compliance programs (Emergency action plan, LOTO, Confined space entry, Machine guarding, powered industrial equipment like forklifts) to ensure compliant of state/county/federal-mandated safety programs.

  • Maintain required environmental documentation related to annual compliance reporting and permits with respective agency (e.g., air discharge permits, storm water discharge permits, local wastewater permits).

  • Incident reporting and management in designated EHS platform and OSHA reporting that includes investigation of accidents thoroughly and effectively, and then respond appropriately as required, including communicating to, training, safety alerts and following up with supervisors and employees.

  • Maintain an audit program to include regular inspections of the facilities to identify any potential safety matters, PPE adherence and work with related department managers to comply with EHS Cardinal Rules of Safety.

  • Manage, and coordinate safety committee and first responders for the site.

  • Ensure deployment and compliance of EHS polices and guidelines at the site.

  • Develop and present safety orientation and training to all employees (including onboarding) to ensure understanding of potential risks which includes drills for fire, tornadoes, and maintain roster to ensure training compliance working with Operations SME’s, Safety Committee and First responders.

  • Update and maintain SDS data using IDEX & Risk management platform(s).

  • Champion and manage sustainability efforts related to industrial waste, recycling, consumption of gas/water/electricity and related reporting.

  • Assist in representing management/site in matters of health and safety with external agencies and organizations.

  • Future growth opportunities may include taking on projects in our manufacturing facility that might include building safety and security related preventative maintenance programs; working with contractors of facilities including maintenance and grounds; active involvement in capital projects;

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Ideally Engineering, Operations or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Manufacturing/Whitegoods/ Diversified Industrial industry is essential.

  • The right candidate will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience having Safety responsibilities.

  • Understanding of OSHA standards and EH&S (Environment, Health, and Safety) protocols.

  • Preferred experience included:

  • Knowledge of state and federal EH&S laws and regulations (e.g. DEQ, OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.)

  • Safety Certification (CSP, ASP, SMS, OHST, CHST, STS, STSC, CET)

  • Project Management experience

  • RIE/Kaizen knowledge

  • Proven experience with data analysis and risk assessment

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, Strong written and verbal communication/presentation skills

  • Able to work independently or in a team environment with all levels of employees.

  • Well organized multi-tasker, Initiative-taking and demonstrating creative and critical thinking capabilities.

  • Ability to work in an agile environment with shifting priorities.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
