Job Description
Job Title Control Room Operator (CRO) - Remote Operations Center (ROC)

Job Summary
The ROC Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for starting, stopping, and monitoring the status of all plant systems continuously. The CRO responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions and executes plant startup and shutdown procedures as required. The CRO assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner. The hourly rate is $52.62.
Job Functions
  • Remotely start, stop, and monitor plant and plant processes across the United States from our ROC in Aliso Viejo, CA.
  • Dispatch on-call resources assigned to locations upon remote starts.
  • Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the ROC Manager and site teams. Make entries in the Operating Log.
  • As an ROC CRO, it is crucial to maintain vigilant attention over the power plant, continually monitoring various parameters to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Receive and respond to electrical and fuel dispatcher's orders and requests.
  • Operate controls to start and stop plant equipment remotely from the ROC.
  • Perform emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment.
  • The ROC CRO operates from established and well-known procedures under general directions and minimum supervision. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The ROC CRO encounters recurring work situations of high complexity with occasional variations from the norm.
  • The CRO has the authority to control the plant's operation and must do so in a manner that is compliant with safety, environmental, and NERC requirements.
  • The CRO must effectively communicate information to ROC Management, personnel, and site teams relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The CRO must perform duties in such a way as to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
  • All employees are responsible to both the customer and their co-workers for doing the job right the first time and ensuring the customer's needs are being met.
  • Progress through the training plan as assigned by the ROC Manager.
  • Periodic travel as required to visit remotely operated plants or for training.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant is required.
  • Must successfully complete the Remote Operating Center CRO learning plan.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities may be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those commonly associated with this position.
  • Must possess basic math skills and good verbal communication skills.
  • Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts and work without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency by adeptly managing and consistently focusing on the intricate details within the power plant, ensuring its safe and efficient operation.
  • Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation of power plant equipment and machinery.
  • Work within and ensure strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.
  • Must be able to respond to audio alarms and variations of sound.
  • Basic data entry/computer skills.
  • Work as a team. Must be able to pool knowledge and energy to work in tandem to completely understand and productively respond to all business challenges.
Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
  • Requires working extended working hours, varied shifts, or 12-hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload, and conditions.
  • Occasional travel to plants for review of operations, in which protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, and other equipment must be worn.

  • Physical requirements include the possibility of working in a seated position for extensive periods, occasionally requiring stair climbing, and occasionally lifting 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing and able to remain on campus for the entirety of the shift (including lunches on-premises).
  • The Aliso Viejo Office is a non-smoking facility. Smoking may not occur immediately outside the building, and there are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
