Close working relationships: Executive Director, Digital Communications and Database Manager; select contractors and vendors; occasional interns
Illinois Humanities, the Illinois affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a statewide nonprofit organization that activates the humanities through free public programs, grants, and educational opportunities that foster reflection, spark conversation, build community, and strengthen civic engagement. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager of Marketing and Communications works with the Senior Director of Development and Communications and across departments to: continually strengthen the organization’s communications practices and systems; oversee the implementation of marketing campaigns and communications projects; ensure communications products adhere to brand and editorial guidelines; and produce and support creative marketing (i.e., social media, editorial, and email campaigns) that advance institutional priorities and messaging.
This position is a member of a Communications team composed of the Executive Director, Senior Director of Development and Communications, Digital Communications and Database Manager, intern(s), and external consultants in advertising, design, marketing, and PR. The Manager frequently collaborates with Illinois Humanities’ Programs staff to support programmatic communications needs and support external partnerships.
The Manager is a proactive, creative thinker with a knack for being able to clearly synthesize complex ideas and stories and make them engaging and accessible to diverse audiences. The position requires proven expertise with: implementing data-driven communications plans; project management for branding, digital media, and copywriting initiatives; the ability to prioritize short-and long-term projects; and experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders inside and outside of an organization. Experience with design and design platforms is a plus.
ESSENTIAL REPSONSIBILITIES:
Strategy and Messaging (15%)
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Development and Communications to refine communications priorities, goals, and metrics that advance the organization’s strategic goals and messaging.
  • Takes a data-informed and collaborative approach to developing and managing the organization’s annual communications work plan, editorial calendar, institutional campaigns, monthly newsletters, and budgets.
  • Strengthens existing relationships with consultants, content creators, and other creatives to increase capacity and impact for communications and marketing efforts.
  • Work with vendors and contractors on PR and advertising strategies. In partnership with PR consultants, drafts press releases, communicates with media outlets and journalists, and creates press/media kits.
  • In partnership with Digital Communications and Database Manager, leads the communications team in continuing to develop success metrics, regularly collecting, tracking, and reporting on these metrics.
Communications Management (40%)
  • Work with communications team and Programs staff to develop content for marketing campaigns to meet institutional, programmatic, and fundraising and cultivation goals.
  • Work closely with Programs staff to identify opportunities for creative storytelling, connect impact-driven stories to institutional goals, and produce creative content campaigns for web, email, and social.
  • Work with interns, consultants, and support staff to project manage communications’ campaigns and projects and manage cross-departmental workflows.
  • Manage contracts with vendors and contractors supporting communications projects
  • Help the communications to innovate, refine processes and systems, and reach/exceed goals and success benchmarks.
  • Develop materials to educate staff on communication practices.
Content production and digital media management (35%)
  • Manages production of creative content such as video, photo, writing, and other media for inbound campaigns, collaborating with internal stakeholders, interns, and project-based contractors when relevant.
  • Produces or sources digital media to support communications campaigns and editorial calendar.
  • Supervise Illinois Humanities social media channels in partnership with consulting contractors/other staff;
  • Maintain oversight and approvals of social media content produced by communications staff, interns, and support staff;
  • Oversee the moderation of IH social media channels, including engaging with followers and network building.
  • Manage IH-owned web properties in partnership with the Digital Communications and Technology Systems Manager and Programs staff;
  • Manage IH brand compliance across all owned websites and digital platforms.
  • Work with web contractors on regular bug fixes, updates, and enhancements.
  • Work with the Digital Communications and Database Manager to keep the Illinois Humanities website up to date, create and source images and digital media, maintain dynamic website features and visualizations with up-to-date editorial, data, and messaging.
  • Copywriting and editing for communications and marketing collateral across platforms.
Special Projects and Campaigns (as assigned) (10%)
  • Supports the roll-out of the updated Illinois Humanities brand during summer 2024.
  • Supports the strategy, messaging, and content production for Illinois Humanities 50th anniversary campaign.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 5 years of relevant management experience in nonprofit, education, or cultural settings
  • In-depth knowledge of best writing and messaging practices for nonprofit communications, public relations, advertising, marketing and sales copy and social media
  • Proficiency with digital design and communications applications, including Sprout and Adobe Creative Cloud; experience with WordPress or Craft CMS preferred.
  • Experience managing multiple projects, programs, and goals simultaneously; a strategic thinker and communicator
  • Experience managing budgets and budget-restricted deliverables from private and government sources
  • Good data analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking skills and experience creating evaluation systems to track communications benchmarks
  • Strong consulting and interpersonal skills; able to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated experience engaging diverse audiences
  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion as core values
  • Experience with media and public relations a plus
  • Proficiency in general office software applications, including Microsoft Office

WHAT WE ARE OFFERING:
  • The annual salary for this position is $72,000 – $76,000
  • Full-time employees are eligible for employer-provided health coverage (multiple plans offered at 80% employer paid premium for the employee), 401(k) (including an employer contribution), and other benefits
  • 12 Vacation Days, 3 Personal days, and 10 days of Sick Leave available to all full-time employees annually, with additional earned vacation after two and five years of employment
  • Each full-time employee receives 11 paid holidays and 3 floating holidays annually
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Step one: All submissions will be reviewed, and the initial candidate pool will be formed after phone screenings. Not all submissions will make it into the candidate pool.
Step two: Candidates in the pool will take part in an interview with members of the Illinois Humanities Team via Zoom or in-person.
Step three: There will be additional rounds of interviews with the final candidates. Final candidates may be asked to provide additional information. Selection and placement of the final candidate will occur after these final rounds of interviews. Once the final candidate has accepted their offer of employment, all other applicants will be notified of their status. This posting will remain open until the position is filled.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Our Chicago Loop office is accessible. Work at off-site locations is required and those may not necessarily be fully accessible. Evening and weekend work is sometimes required. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employees are regularly required to talk, hear, see, and communicate effectively via computer.
