SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Residence Life positions are responsible for shared management of all functions of residence hall(s) of approximately 500 students and supervising a staff of approximately 15-17 resident assistants. This position coordinates complex housing programs, hears students conduct cases, conducts regular staff and supervisory meetings, responds to emergency situations, and determines course of action. This position serves as a liaison between Residence Life, Student Life, Student Affairs and Safety departments. The Assistant Director is also responsible for shared on-call responsibilities. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students, Residence Life and Housing. These positions have the option of college housing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise staff of resident assistants including recruitment, selection, training, ongoing supervision and evaluation, of Student Leaders (with emphasis on Resident Assistant Staff) and their retention.
  • Conduct weekly supervisory meetings with student staff, responsible for the planning, implementation, and assessment of training and on-going development for the Resident Assistant staff.
  • Respond to students issue calls, emergencies, crises within residential facilities and determine appropriate courses of action / resolution.
  • Responsible for housing assignment process, openings, closings, vacation breaks manage move in / out / and associated housing changes.
  • Designated to act and make determinations of appropriate actions relative to Student Code of Conduct violations, serves as disciplinary hearing officer.
  • Responsible for use and monitoring of budgeting of residence hall funds, oversees and assumes responsibility for programming budget and funds for assigned residence halls.
  • Serve as primary residential student resource and provides personal counseling / advisement for residents and refers sensitive matters as appropriate.
  • Monitor the physical condition of building on a regular basis and works with appropriate departments on problem resolution to ensure a safe, clean and welcoming environment for student residents.
  • Coordinate summer housing operations and supervises summer student staff.
  • Assist the Director with long range planning including housing occupancy predictions and strategies.
  • Serve as advisor to Residence Council.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation as it pertains to Residence Life and Housing responsibilities, and other duties as assigned.
  • Develop and provide ongoing education and awareness to student population of University resources for helping students with academic, career, and personal concerns and to make referrals when appropriate.
  • Participate in IU wide events in support of residence housing such as open houses, parents' weekend, new student orientation (NSO), etc.
  • Serve on University committees, task forces, and projects as designated.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation for crisis response.
  • There are two positions for Assistant Director with cross over duties, but each has specific focus areas. This position will have specific focus on Resident Education which includes:
    • Oversee the development and implementation of the residence education model for Residence Life and Housing.
    • Communicate with appropriate campus constituents to create awareness, collaboration, and strategies for implementation.
    • Coordinate the planning, implementation, and assessment of community building through hall programs and initiatives.
    • Assist in the maintenance of the Residence Life and Housing digital resources, social media networks, bulletin boards and postings for areas of primary responsibility as applicable.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration or related field preferred, Bachelors degree required.
  • At least 1 - 3 years of experience in residential programming preferably in a college/university setting, with supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work with time sensitive projects in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to multi-task while remaining pleasant and professional.
  • Computer skills including all Microsoft office, housing management systems, previous experience with Banner preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusiveness and ability to interact positively with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively and handle administrative details independently.
  • Ability to manage staff including hiring, evaluating, supervising and providing ongoing feedback.
  • Ability to plan, execute, evaluate and revise activities to reach the long- and short-term goals of the Residence Life department and the University.
  • Understanding of and commitment to student development theory and approaches to learning.
  • Ability to effectively manage crisis response, interpret and use University policy and manage budgeted resources.
  • Evening, on call and weekend work required.
  • A meal plan is not included in this position
