Indian Health Service is Hiring a Dentist (Open Continuous) Near Lawton, OK

SummaryThe Oklahoma City Area consists of 8 Service Units with federally operated hospitals, clinics and smaller health stations. The incumbent will provide basic and advanced dental health services to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service policies. This position reports to the Service Unit Dental Chief.

Duties
  • Independently examine, diagnose, and treat commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems.
  • Diagnose malocclusions, and pathological or irregular conditions and ensure proper referral of patients for evaluation or specialty care.
  • Provide all appropriate dental disease prevention measures for each patient treated.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families with multiple dental and health problems and of different backgrounds.
  • Ensure appropriate medical records are maintained and updated in a timely manner.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. QualificationsTo qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Waiting Period For Impending Graduates:The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize an available flexibility wherein applicants who are actively completing a required professional training program and are expected to complete such program within 9 months of applying, may be deemed tentatively qualified.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
GS-11:
Applicants who meet the 3 Basic Requirements below qualify for the GS-11.
  • Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (You MUST list your Dentistry license number on your resume, along with the expiration date, OR submit a copy of your Dentistry license that includes expiration date. New graduates must submit verification of licensure prior to encumbering a position with IHS.)
  • Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:GS-12: In addition to meeting the 3 Basic Requirements above, you must also meet one of the following Minimum Qualifications stated below to be considered at the GS-12 level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower (GS-11) grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
  • Applicants must have completed a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science;
OR
  • Your resume must demonstrate at least 2 years of equivalent experience; equivalent to at least the lower GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the private or public sector), and/or training. Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience at this level includes: making radiographic examinations of oral cavity, diagnosing pathological or irregular conditions, administering local anesthesia, performing simple and complex restoration of cavities, and performing single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth.
Education
This position has an education requirement. You are strongly encouraged to submit a copy of your transcripts or a list of your courses including titles, credit hours completed, and grades. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. Official transcripts will be required from all selectees prior to receiving an official offer.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
This position may be covered by a Bargaining Unit.
Relocation expenses may be authorized and paid upon approval. You will be required to sign a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.
