Job Summary

The IU Research Data Commons, through partner Irsay Institute, is looking to hire an experienced program manager who will take on a portfolio of projects aimed at creating an easily navigable set of resources across IU campuses related to research data. The mission of the Research Data Commons, a new initiative of IU Research, is to support production, sharing, and collaboration around research data across the university. A person in this role would be interested in learning about and communicating about the quickly evolving world of research data.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supports of 12 faculty/staff workgroups in virtual and in-person meetings.
  • Produces wiki-like documentation materials on data policies, resources, and guides.
  • Develops and deploys of specialized Canvas training modules on specific data topics
  • Produces project reports and deliverables for university faculty and administrative audiences.
  • Schedules regular business meetings, note-taking and follow-up, some administrative tasks in support of specific projects.
  • Coordinates of effort and output of graduate hourly and other hourly workers.
  • Works closely with the many faculty and staff involved in the initiative to coordinate comprehensive documentation, training modules, user guides, and presentation materials.
  • Schedules and convenes meetings, keeps faculty and staff workgroups on task and on timelines, and reports back to faculty leadership about progress and issues as they develop.
  • Collaborates with others in drafting technical documents, reports, and public-facing materials about research data and related resources.

General Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.
  • Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public; approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
  • Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants; May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.
  • Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.
  • Keeps abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

  • Experience producing reports and presentations for public or specialized audiences
  • Knowledge and experience with IU specialized data resources
  • Health, medical, social science and/or other data and/or research-related experience

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

This position is funded through June 2025, with extension possible pending successful performance and renewal of the Research Data Commons initiative.
