GENERAL SUMMARY

The SMS Program Manager provides guidance and direction for the planning, implementation, and operation of the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS). Serves as the primary administrator of the airport’s SMS software.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • The SMS Program Manager is responsible for providing information and advice to senior management on matters related to SMS and safe operations. Tact, diplomacy, and a high degree of integrity are prerequisites.
  • The position requires flexibility because assignments may be undertaken with little or no notice and outside normal work hours.
  • The SMS Program Manager must interact with operational personnel, senior managers, and departmental heads throughout the organization. The SMS Program Manager should also foster positive relationships with regulatory authorities, agencies, tenants, and service providers outside the organization. Other contacts will be established at a working level as appropriate.
  • Dynamic and capable of making correct and timely decisions about safety issues.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to relate to airport staff and stakeholders
  • Familiarity with airport reporting systems
  • Leadership and capacity to influence staff to support safety promotion initiatives
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with SMS software
  • Manage changing circumstances and situations with little supervision. The SMS Program Manager acts independently of other managers within the organization
  • Additional duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in the related field
  • SMS Certification is preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in the aviation industry
  • Ability to pass federal background check
  • Clear driving record
  • Ability to work for a US employer without sponsorship

SKILLS

  • Proven working knowledge of Part 139, Advisory Circulars, FAA Orders, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Proven exposure to Safety Management Systems (SMS), Safety, and Quality Assurance
  • Broad operational knowledge and experience in the functions of the organization (e.g., training management, aircraft operations, air traffic management, aerodrome operations, and maintenance organization management)
  • Sound knowledge of SMS principles and practices
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relate to all levels, both inside and outside the organization
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised

  • Knowledge of the aeronautical system, safety, and SMS processes
  • Experience with airport activities associated to the SMS scope
