POSITION PURPOSE

The Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of represented maintenance employees and the maintenance of the corporation’s equipment and rolling stock.

* The salary for this position is $55,000 - $65,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, an individual must be able to perform in a satisfactory manner the functions listed below. The company will make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

• Determine, gather, and provide the materials, parts, tools, and labor necessary for bus vehicle and equipment repairs.

• Supervise all vehicle and equipment repairs; manage an efficient workflow and verify units have been properly fixed.

• Ensure that preventative and predictive maintenance, repair work, and fueling and cleaning of rolling stock and equipment are accomplished in a timely and thorough
manner.

• Enforce departmental policies, including policies related to work schedules and assigning personnel to carry out required work effectively.

• Complete relevant paperwork and reports; this includes ensuring that all maintenance actions (bus defects and repairs, etc.) are properly documented.

• Create and close work orders as appropriate.

• Provide support to mechanics, including answering questions and addressing complaints.

• Manage labor relations, ensuring labor is assigned in accordance with the current contract.

• This position is accountable for safety in the workplace.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

• Recommend new methods aimed at improving maintenance procedures and controlling the use of materials, parts, and supplies; work with other departments, including but not limited to storeroom fixed route and flexible and contracted services, to improve processes and services and to reduce costs.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Directly supervise one or more employees.

• Apply supervisory responsibilities according to organizational policies and applicable laws.

• Assist with interviews, hiring decisions, and training employees; plans, schedules, assigns, and directs work; sets goals for the staff; evaluates and manages employee performance; addresses complaints and resolves employee issues.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience.

• High school diploma or equivalent; formal trade school or an associate degree in an automotive or engineering program or a related field is preferred.

• Three to five years of vehicle maintenance experience and customer service experience is required, preferably in a union environment.

• A valid Indiana Operators Driver’s License is required; a valid Indiana Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The company will make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

• Advanced knowledge of vehicle maintenance and how to install, maintain, and repair relevant equipment; this includes knowledge related to preventative maintenance, related safety guidelines and parameters, mechanics, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and the vehicle structure and body.

• Operational knowledge of mandated safety principles related to personal protective equipment, chemical hazards, lockout/tag out, and general shop safety and
cleanliness practices.

• Knowledge of labor relations and contract negotiations.

• Proficiency in using a computer and related technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, the Internet, and complex spreadsheets and databases.

• Ability to operate office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and phones.

• Good presentation skills and the ability to communicate to groups.

• Ability to interact with others, both in person and through phone, e-mail, and written correspondence.

• Above average decision-making and problem-solving abilities.

• Basic mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

• Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment.

• Ability to work independently with work checked on a regular basis.

• Ability to remain stationary for long periods of time, to position self to work in a confined space, and to move throughout the workday, occasionally between departments and facilities.

• Requires exposure to heavy machinery and equipment, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, fumes/odors, some hazardous materials, and dirt/dust.

• Evening and weekend work and holiday hours are required occasionally; “on-call” availability is required.
