Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is currently seeking a skilled Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Level 1 Inspector to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team to support our projects in District 6. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to work on a range of exciting transportation projects in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).
Position Summary
This position is responsible for, but not limited to, picking up asphalt samples from various plants around the Lowcountry and surrounding areas as well as weighing roadway cores to ensure compliance with current specifications. The position will perform inspection activities such as asphalt sample testing, including ignition oven burn, gradation and weighing of roadway cores from various projects in District 6. The inspector will record daily notes and report to the District 6 Asphalt Manager or other clients as needed. When needed, the position will serve as asphalt roadway inspector responsible for determining quantities for HMA placed, monitoring density with nuclear devices, as well are reporting rates as needed.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure all materials, procedures, and safety rules comply with the latest SCDOT standards.
  • Sample and test asphalt materials on the roadway and at the plant to ensure they meet the quality requirements of the project specifications.
  • Recording Daily Work Reports to include asphalt test data in AASHTOWare software.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.
  • Attend meetings and interact with the client and third-party personnel.
  • Must use diplomacy in difficult and stressful situations.
Qualifications 
  • Must have math calculation skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) experience.
  • Strong written and communication skills required.
  • Current driver’s license with a safe record is required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US.
  • Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.
Requirements
  • HS diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate or BS Degree in Civil Engineering desired.
  • 2 or more years of highway construction or asphalt plant experience preferred.
  • SCDOT Roadway and HMA Level 1 certified desired.
Physical Demands
This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds sometimes on a frequent basis. The inspector must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions not limited to loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures. The inspector must be able to work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment.
Expected Hours of Work
This position will be a full-time position that may require travel, extended work hours, and night and weekend work. Inspectors will be eligible for preapproved overtime at time and a half.
