About the Role

Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is looking for great people to join our Team! We are looking for a Construction Inspector in the (West LaFayette or Terra Haute, IN area) who will have the opportunity to work on an innovative project in the Lafayette, IN area. We are a leading engineering firm known for quality and responsiveness and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil Engineering firm. The Construction Inspector works closely with the Resident Engineer to ensure conformance with standards, safety, and contract requirements. This role oversees the contractor’s daily activities and the work of ‘junior’ inspectors. What You'll Do

  • Works under the general guidance and direction of a Senior Construction Inspector or a Resident Engineer.
  • Reviews field staking and makes revisions within the scope of authority.
  • Verifies levels, alignment, and elevation of installation using the surveyor's level.
  • Coordinates activities and schedules with utility companies, contractors, property owners, and other agencies.
  • Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures and materials conform to plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Records quantities of material received.
  • Examines quality of finished installations for conformity to industry standards.
  • Measures distances to verify the accuracy of dimensions of installation.
  • Maintains daily reports of construction activities and performs filing duties.
  • Takes progress photos of the construction activities.
  • Prepares sketches of construction installations that deviate from plans and incorporates changes into as-built drawings.
  • Performs work following safety policies and procedures.
  • Handles complaints either personally or by referring to the Resident Engineer.
  • Responsibilities may include an entire project or may focus on one specific project area.

To Be Successful

  • Knowledge of industry Standards and Specifications for different agencies. 
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements: personal and workers' safety.
  • Knowledge of MOT Standards and Erosion Control Measures.
  • Skill to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Considerable skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Skill in applying material testing procedures.
  • Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field and office data.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information, orally and in writing, professionally to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, governmental agency representatives, and the general public.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Legal citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Completed NYDOT's Certified Technician Program (CTP) by passing all six (6) tests.
  • Completed NYDOT's proficiency test.

Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Conditions
  • Usually works in outside weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or in-progress construction hazards: fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration. Often works around dust, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Must be physically capable of walking and moving about on the construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Spends some time working indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
  • Usually works a standard 40-hour workweek either daytime or nighttime.
  • Sometimes needs to put in extra hours, including weekends, to keep up with intense construction work at times and deal with unexpected situations and accidents.
  • IEI will provide a company vehicle for fieldwork with acceptable driver's record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work outdoors in various weather conditions, possibly for an extended period of time, depending on the assignment type. The noise level in the office work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud and may require hearing protection.
