The Histology Technician Trainee follows the standard operating procedures for embedding to ensure the quality of blocks and proceeding steps in the production of slides with guidance and supervision from HT III and Lead Histotechnician. Obtains and processes pathology specimens maintaining positive specimen identification, assist histology technicians, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure the quality preparation of all specimens. Performs routine staining procedures, coverslips and appropriately labels slides, and reviews stain quality microscopically . Responsible for cutting, staining, and preparing tissue samples for the pathologist to review and prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner and maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done following established policies, procedures, and regulations. Communicates to maintain team knowledge, demonstrates knowledge of regulatory standards to satisfy compliance requirements, and participates in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team, and department development.

Requirements for consideration:

Minimum Education:

• High School diploma or equivalent only if have 2 years as a Histology Assistant or equivalent with 1 year of embedding or Bachelor’s Degree in Science to include: At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), Bachelor's degree in a science to include: , OR , Successful completion of a N/AACLS Histotechnican program within the last five years prior to the date of application for examination.

Years of Experience:

• 2 years’ experience as a Histology assistant or equivalent with 1 year of embedding experience.; or Bachelor’s Degree with no experience

Job Responsibilities

• Cuts 15-20 quality slides per hour; Ensures that the tissue is embedded according to procedure and quality blocks are produced to ensure quality slides are made; Follows Quality Assurance SOP for any discrepancies or concerns.
• Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies, and assist with continuous workflow by providing work to assistants; Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies, and assist with continuous workflow by providing work to the strainers and per SOP. Communicates unresolved problems to the staff/management at all times.
• Embeds 30-35 quality cassettes per hour; Recognizes and identifies different gross tissue structures to ensure proper orientation; Obtains and organizes specimens correctly for further processing, according to established procedures; Ensures cassettes are labeled accurately, according to established procedures; Processes specimens in appropriate fixatives, reagents, and programs according to established procedures.
• Maintains laboratory equipment in a clean and operational state, according to established procedures (no more than 3 occurrences); Demonstrates troubleshooting skills and corrective action skills with any instrument or specimen processing errors (at all times).
• Maintains accurate documentation, including computerized documentation if applicable, following established policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Maintains a clean water bath and cleans water surface between sections to ensure sections are free of floaters and cross-contamination (no more than 3 occurrences).
• Other duties as assigned.
