Department Summary

The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas has an enrollment of close to 47,000 students with 185 buildings and 12 residence halls on 900 acres.

Risk Management Services’ programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational, and financial foundation of the University of North Texas.

We help identify, analyze, and mitigate risks to prevent loss and provide a safe and healthy campus environment so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement.

To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges, and work through any issues that occur.

Position Overview

The campus Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Officer plays a key role in maintaining a safe environment for the University of North Texas (UNT) students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

This position is responsible for proactive fire prevention measures through inspections, drills, permits, and training initiatives.

This includes conducting regular inspections of buildings and Automated External Defibrillators (AED) while identifying potential hazards and ensuring their correction.

The FLS Officer also plays a part in supporting safe event operations. The role demands a strong understanding of fire codes and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with diverse campus personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and two years of experience in safety administration, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fire prevention principles, and life safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to effectively schedule inspections and complete reports in a timely manner
  • Utilize building and fire code knowledge to identify and address potential safety hazards
  • Knowledge of building construction fire protection systems, hazardous materials, and plans review
  • Proven ability to tailor communication style to diverse audiences for effective information exchange
  • Capability to build positive relationships with University personnel to ensure cooperation with fire safety measures
  • Ability to work independently without supervision
  • Ability to occasionally perform physically demanding tasks under varying weather conditions outdoors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Intermediate, Advanced or Master Fire Inspector certification or equivalent certifications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, and Word is highly recommended
  • Previous experience working with a state or federal agency that requires supportive coordination with local government officials
  • Fire service experience

Required License / Registration / Certifications

TCFP Basic Fire Inspector certification is required within one year of the start date for those who do not currently hold a valid inspector certification.

Job Duties :

  • Schedules, coordinates, and performs fire and life safety inspections.
  • Identifies and recommends corrective actions to be taken to resolve fire and life safety issues.
  • Prepares clear and accurate inspection reports and a variety of written reports as required.
  • Enters all required work orders into the appropriate repair shops.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of all AEDs assigned to UNT, replacing expired pads and batteries as needed.
  • Issue and log hot-work and space heater permits when requested.
  • Provide assistance in conducting evacuation drills as required.
  • Assist with the coordination of event safety planning, venue inspections, and provide event standby when requested.
  • Assist Fire and Life Safety Program Manager in performing tasks relating to fire and life safety as directed.
  • Provide assistance to Emergency Management and Safety Services Team in a variety of emergency preparedness activities, training initiatives and projects as directed.
  • Perform follow-up inspections of fire and life safety findings to verify completion and appropriate resolution.
  • Build trust with clients to foster a proactive approach to fire safety.

8-5 M-F with some work performed outside of normal hours and weekends.
