Housing Case Aide

The Refugee Housing Case Aide plays a pivotal role in our Reception & Placement (R&P) client services program by providing essential housing support to newly arrived refugees. Reporting to the Refugee Housing Coordinator, the Case Aide supports refugees throughout their journey to self-sufficiency, offering field-based assistance to help them secure housing and access necessary services. In addition, the Case Aide may provide interpretation and other support services as needed.

Position Details:

  • Department – Refugee and Immigrant Services
  • Reports to Housing Coordinator
  • Located in Birmingham
  • In-person work required, local travel up to 75%
  • Monday through Friday; 8:30AM – 5:00PM
  • Hourly pay range $16.84 - $18.27

Responsibilities:

  • Assists newly arrived refugees with applying for and securing safe and affordable housing in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Creates lease summary documents and provides explanations of lease terms to clients, ensuring thorough understanding; assists clients with signing and maintaining copies of their lease documents.
  • Completes home safety inspections and compiles home supply lists to ensure client safety and comfort.
  • Supports clients in making maintenance requests to facilitate timely repairs.
  • Conducts move-ins and home setups, ensuring clients are comfortably settled.
  • Assists Case Managers with transporting clients from their temporary housing to their permanent housing as needed.
  • Assists case managers with clerical duties when assigned. This may include creating case files, filing documents, printing records, or driving refugees to various appointments.
  • Supports Housing Coordinator in establishing and maintaining positive relationships with landlords and property management companies.
  • Aids Housing Coordinator in identifying and evaluating new areas for refugee resettlement within the Birmingham-metro area.
  • Assists Housing Coordinator with making rent and utility payments on behalf of clients, ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Coordinates the collection and distribution of large furniture donations; follows inventory procedures for items stored in storage units.
  • Maintains detailed case notes and records of client interactions and progress.
  • Tracks financial transactions related to rent, utilities, and housing supplies.
  • Records program progress and outcomes in databases managed by the Housing Coordinator.
  • Provides interpretation as needed and performs other duties as assigned to support the goals of the refugee resettlement program.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software as needed.
  • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive partnerships with clients, landlords, and other community partners.
  • Capacity to set boundaries while maintaining a supportive role, intervening appropriately to meet the needs of clients and their families.

Physical Demands:

Regularly required to talk and hear. Required to stand, walk, sit, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools and controls: and reach with hands and arms. Required to operate a personal vehicle and Inspiritus vehicles including 12-passanger van and box truck. Employees frequently lift and or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
