Reporting to the Chief People Officer, the Employee Relations Director will lead the employee relations function and define, develop, and implement training, frameworks and solutions that enable IOA to attract and retain a high performing workforce. This strategic, collaborative, and hands-on role is responsible for promoting transparency in performance management, ensuring compliance with all employment laws and regulations, facilitating training, and optimizing communication that positively influences the employee experience. The Employee Relations Director serves as a trusted thought partner to the company's business leaders and key stakeholders by providing coaching, insights, and expertise while minimizing risk to the organization. Key Responsibilities Functions as the HR Business Partner to management teams or business units. Supports the operating team in the achievement of its people related objectives for employee engagement, customer satisfaction, talent development and the development and maintenance of a high performing workforce. Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough, and objective investigations. Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with stakeholders by ensuring employee relations matters are addressed in a comprehensive and collaborative manner. Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Consults with outside counsel as needed. Provides day-to-day performance management guidance to line management (e.g., coaching counseling, career development, disciplinary actions). Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale and increase productivity and retention. Drive employee engagement activities. Review data to understand areas of need and effectiveness of employee engagement improvement strategies; collaborate with management, departments and teams in the development and implementation of action plans aimed at addressing their specific needs. Collaborates in the planning of employee engagement events. Fosters internal partnerships across departments, modeling a culture of transparent and inclusive communication. Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR colleagues to develop solutions, programs, and policies. Communicates with managers of bargaining unit employees regarding contract interpretation, policy interpretation and compliance. Provides leadership coaching, development, training, and support to managers and supervisors, as well as on-boarding support for new managers. Provides consultation on concerns related to applicable Equal Employment Opportunity laws including Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and other similar federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Collaborates with HR colleagues and supports the delivery of strategic HR initiatives, including project management of key annual HR process cycles Partners with management in the form of advice and counsel regarding application of human resource practices, policies and procedures, application and administration of collective bargaining agreements, compliance with employment regulations and laws, and resolution of complaints and grievances. Represent the IOA’s commitment to DEIB during organizational and community meetings, forums, and training programs to highlight and enhance the growth and support the IOA’s commitment to DEIB. Serves as a liaison for individuals with specific needs/issues related to inclusion and inequities and works with internal channels to address issues of bias, equity, and belonging. Collaborates with key partners in the design, implementation and annual updates of the IOA’s Affirmative Action and other Equal Employment Opportunity initiatives and programs. Collect, analyze, monitor, and disseminate DEIB data to benchmark and promote accountability for DEIB efforts. Uses business understanding to advise on appropriate organizational design and structures, workforce planning, and succession planning. Participates in the evaluation and monitoring of training programs to ensure successful outcomes. Facilitates various HR related training sessions. Assists in the development and implementation of HR policies, guidelines, and procedures. Builds and maintains effective union relations. Serves as lead on union negotiations for two unions. Understands the strategic direction of the business and provides guidance and insight as required in support of delivery against relevant business goals and objectives. All other reasonably related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in HR or Business-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required Master’s Degree or Juris Doctor preferred. Union/labor relations experience strongly preferred. Minimum of 8 years of experience resolving complex employee relations issues. SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential preferred. Subject matter expert in regulatory areas (i.e., ADA, FMLA) and compliance. Strong capabilities in investigating and preparing strategy and responses to third-party EEOC, OFCCP and other governmental changes and requests as well as threatened litigation. Deep experience in employee relations, labor relations and employment law. Strong diversity and inclusion competence and passion for the integration of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices in employee relations Demonstrate cultural competence working in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies. Demonstrated track record of partnering with people leaders to manage complex employment matters to mitigate risk and drive business results. Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills to establish trust, credibility, and rapport at all levels of the organization. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Experience of working in the health care environment strongly desired. Physical Requirements: Ability to reach, bend and walk Capability to lift, transfer, push/pull, maneuver, and reposition 25 lbs. This position is based in the San Francisco office and requires limited travel to other IOA sites. All work must be performed within the State of California.
