POSITION: SUPERVISOR OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

LOCATION: Brooks Administration Building (BOE)

POSITION SUMMARY: Leads the Visual and Performing Arts program. Supervises and provides leadership in the development and implementation of the elementary and secondary Visual and Performing Arts program including the areas of visual arts, music, dance, and drama. Observes, evaluates and collaborates with school-based administrators in the evaluation of teachers. Acts as a resource to teachers and administrators in addressing the needs of all learners in achieving academic success. Coordinates county level visual and performing arts opportunities.

REPORTS TO: Director of System and Instructional Performance

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  1. Administrator I endorsement (or be eligible for this endorsement by August 1, 2024).
  2. Master’s degree in Visual or Performing Arts or Curriculum and Instruction.
  3. Five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a teacher in one of the Visual or Performing Arts.
  4. Three (3) years of successful administrative or supervisory experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.) At the time of employment, the candidate must have:

  1. Demonstrated ability in critical reading and writing skills as well as verbal communication
  2. Have collaborative leadership skills with the ability to work as a team member.
  3. Have knowledge of sound instructional practices and pedagogy that will increase student achievement when measured in a variety of different ways.
  4. Understanding of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, Multi-tiered system of support, and strong tier 1 universal instruction and equitable and inclusive learning environments that support student success. 
  5. Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable practices in all facets of education.
  6. Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
  7. Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable practices in all facets of education.
  8. Understands how trauma, equity, inclusive practices and restorative practices impacts the student and teacher experience. 
  9. Understanding of instructional technology, including digital curriculum and tools, and its use in the classroom knowledge and demonstrated ability to analyze and use data to make instructional and program decisions.
  10. Have demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, parents, and community members.
  11. Have demonstrated ability in serving as an advocate for the Visual and Performing Arts in an effort to increase enrollment and/or participation in classes and programs.
  12. Understanding of how to work with teachers in the supervision process in order to improve instruction.

  2. Have demonstrated ability to multi-task and follow-through to meet deadlines effectively.
  3. Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale.

  5. Possess a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle insurance.Have demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to the responsibilities listed below.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) may find appropriate and acceptable.

 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  1. Provides leadership to staff in elementary and secondary Visual and Performing Arts curriculum including, but not limited to curriculum design, instructional resources development, instructional practices, implementation of appropriate content areas assessments, and organization of the CCPS curriculum management system.
  2. Manages critical content for Visual and Performing Arts student learning objectives.
  3. Collaborates with other instructional staff to design and implement instructional programming to assure student performance and adherence to the COMAR and the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards in elementary and secondary Visual and Performing Arts
  4. Develops and provides guidance for Visual and Performing Arts Quarterly Assessments for middle and high school Visual and Performing Arts.
  5. Coordinates vertical articulation of the Visual and Performing Arts program leading to the development of students that are college, career and citizenship ready.
  6. Plans and implements professional development and content area workshops for elementary and secondary Visual and Performing Arts teachers.
  7. Works with school administrators in the observation, rating and evaluation of Visual and Performing Arts teachers.
  8. Prepares recommendations for the Director of System and Instructional Performance or the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) regarding implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts program.
  9. Coordinates with the supervisors in Charles and St. Mary’s counties on the development of the performance calendar and hosting the Tri-County Honor Band, Chorus, and Orchestra.
  10. Plans and executes logistics including the hiring of judges and conductors for music events including all county, tri-county, solo & ensemble and adjudication.
  11. Plan and executes logistics including the hiring of judges and clinicians for theatre events including improv workshop and scene & monologue festival.
  12. Plans and executes the Summer Arts Academy including hiring of staff, logistics, transportation, budget, and materials.
  13. Attends local school and state Visual and Performing Arts performances throughout the year.
  14. Works collaboratively with elementary and secondary content area supervisors to infuse reading, writing, research, and speaking and listening strategies into the implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts program.
  1. Prepares an annual budget for elementary and secondary Visual and Performing Arts and monitors spending.
  2. Manages the fine arts initiative grant from MSDE including application, data, finance and reporting.
  3. Represents Calvert County at regional and state meetings addressing the implementation of effective Visual and Performing Arts programming.
  4. Coordinates text and software adoption consistent with effective Visual and Performing Arts programming.
  5. Keeps informed of the latest trends and research in addressing student learning deficiencies and acceleration in the area of Visual and Performing Arts.
  6. Confers regularly with Department of Special Education staff to assure appropriate achievement for all students in the area of Visual and Performing Arts.
  7. Assists in the screening, interviewing and hiring of Visual and Performing Arts personnel.
  8. Assists in the preparation of press releases, brochures, and parent materials related to Visual and Performing Arts curriculum and other related elementary and secondary curricular and instructional programs.
  9. Coordinates the repair of instruments, dry cleaning of uniforms, tuning of pianos, and purchase of instruments and equipment for the Visual and Performing arts programs.
  10. Arranges for busing and substitute teachers for county, tri-county, and state events plus provides financial assistance to students going to state events.
  11. Plans and executes Calvert County art exhibits, Board of Education displays, and Youth Art Month and arranges art exhibits for the local community, Maryland State Department of Education, and state conferences and conventions.
  12. Works with the Arts Council of Calvert County to provide Arts in Education grants for teachers/schools, coordinates exhibits with the CalvArt Gallery, and arrange for student participation in community exhibits.
  13. Develops teacher leadership and guides teachers by providing opportunities for goal setting, growth activities, and reflection.
  14. Engages all stakeholders in courageous conversations about equity to ensure a shared responsibility for student and school success and promotes equitable learning environments.
  15. Complies with the administrative policies and procedures and current negotiated agreements for Calvert County Public Schools.
  16. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  17. Comes to work promptly every day.
  18. Works flexible hours as necessary.
  19. Works under stress and meets all deadlines.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

  1. Performs related work as required or assigned by the director or CAO.
  2. Is available to work flexible hours at the request of the director or CAO.
  3. Is available to various student, teacher, and community groups for education-related purposes beyond the regular work day.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing walking, and periodic lifting.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the salary schedule for administrators and supervisors. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: July 29, 2024
