Instrumental is Hiring a Web Frontend Engineer - Manufacturing Near Palo Alto, CA

Imagine writing software with no debugger, no logging, and only getting to compile it three times before you need to ship millions of copies. That's what building electronics products is like for hardware, quality, and process engineers. As a result of this data- and insight-poor environment, companies waste significant time, money, and material. Instrumental's manufacturing AI and data platform solves this problem for the most admired hardware companies in the world.

Instrumental’s mission is to drive manufacturing efficiencies through technology that empowers teams to build products better, faster, and with less waste. Brands like Meta, Bose, Cisco, and SolarEdge use our technology to optimize their manufacturing processes and deliver superior products in less time. We start by collecting data that no one else can; then we use machine learning and visualizations to automatically identify defects and help companies understand their assembly processes. As a result, product and process problems are caught and solved earlier, before they create delays and cost millions.

About the Role:

In this role, you will extend the frontend of the web application our customers use to interact with data we collect from their assembly lines. We’re specifically looking for an engineer who understands the manufacturing industry – this could be through a prior role in supply chain, hardware design, operations, program management, etc.

Our team is actively working to define product-market fit this year – a frontend engineer who has truly lived the problems of our users will be invaluable in building high-impact features. If you’re currently working in a hardware engineering role and looking for your first software position, this could particularly be a really unique opportunity!

What's Great About This Role Is:

  • Deliver AI-powered features: Deliver AI-powered tools that many customers had not considered possible. That includes working with our Product, ML, and backend teams to translate complex AI concepts into easy-to-understand and actionable features.
  • Great engineering experience: Our team prioritizes making the software development cycle enjoyable. We strive to implement processes and tools that allow us to rapidly deliver with confidence, including being able to deploy the frontend with a single command and “branch environments” that allow us to test any work in a production-like environment with real data.
  • Learning and growth: Our unique approach to developing software enables our team to wear different hats across different projects while working with a massively supportive, low-ego team that values transparency and rapid iteration.
  • Make an impact: Work in a highly cross-functional, fast-paced, and iterative environment, and be empowered to participate in fulfilling our company mission to eliminate half of the inefficiencies in manufacturing – a $12T problem.
We're Looking for Someone Who:
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at startup scale; ready to tackle evolving challenges that require incremental and fast-paced innovation. Deep curiosity for the end-user experience and who approaches technical solutions from the end-user's perspective.
  • Has written web app frontends for at least 2 years, familiarity with multiple frameworks is a plus.
  • Is excited to be part of the product process and takes a user-oriented view of their work. We won’t ask you to be a PM or designer - you will spend most of your time coding or reviewing code - but we expect you to collaborate and take ownership when we don’t have detailed acceptance criteria or comprehensive mockups.
  • Is comfortable communicating clearly and often, because the problems we are solving can be complex.
  • Is thorough in their work, internally motivated, and excited about Instrumental’s mission.
  • Resonates with Instrumental’s cultural values: Play to Win, Be Helpful, and Work with Joy.

We’re a growing team that works collaboratively, is supportive of each other, and is highly energized by the opportunity for a large impact. We actively work to promote an inclusive environment, valuing passion and the ability to learn. You’re encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn’t precisely match the job description!

The following is a representative annual base salary range for this position within the Bay Area: $159k-$177k. In addition, job level & salary opportunity are evaluated through our interview process – more senior applications are welcome to apply as we review the experience, skills, and abilities of each applicant.

Instrumental is very proud to offer a highly-rated variety of benefits including: Health, Vision, Dental, Public Transit/Commuter Plans, and Parental Leave.
