Position Details

American Worldwide Agencies is currently seeking a dedicated and skilled Import Manager to join our team. The Import Manager will be responsible for managing the Import branch to comply with the company policies and culture. The Import Manager will be responsible to increase customer interaction and satisfaction, defining and monitoring operator KPIs, fostering a productive and gratifying team culture, and to drive overall company profit.

The Import Manager will coordinate and ensure the expeditious delivery of all ocean and air consignments using personal judgment and independent discretion to increase the margin on each shipment – all while keeping the customer informed of any new developments along the way. Schedule as follows:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm (occasional Saturday)
Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000/yr. (DOE)
Location: Hawthorne, CA (onsite)
Status Type: Full-time, exempt
Position Responsibilities
Increase the profitability of the branch:
  • To increase the overall profitability of the Import branch by making use of independent judgement to engage with vendors to reduce the costs of each shipment.
  • To utilize their experience and professional savvy to identify the most efficient – both in terms of time and cost – route for each shipment to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • To hold vendors accountable by defining an expected standard of service delivery pertaining delivery, timely updates, and invoicing.
  • To establish a relationship with our shipping vendors that will allow for rate negotiations in the future.
  • To utilize the reporting functionality of CargoWise to analyze the profit and loss of each shipment and to use this information to shape operational procedures that will prevent future losses.
  • To define clear and concise standard operating procedures that will outline each operator’s responsibility and expected duties - and to hold each operator accountable to these outlined standards by assessing the departmental performance, identifying operational weaknesses and implementing meaningful changes.
Coordinate, manage, and oversee all Import operations:
  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of the workflow utilized in the department to ensure that the workflow is consistent with our goal of efficiency and effectiveness.
  • To monitor workflow and reports to ensure that operators are fulfilling their duties toward each shipment and to encourage operators to exceed customer expectations.
  • To increase overall customer satisfaction by keeping the customer well-informed, every step of the way, while ultimately striving for the expeditious delivery of all cargo.
  • To ensure compliance of all rules and regulations prescribed by CBP, IATA, TSA (and all other governing bodies).
  • To improve the overall interaction between the operators and other parts of the organization – the warehouse department, the accounting department, and the support team in Manila – to ensure proper alignment with capacity planning and ensure mutual goals and objectives are accomplished in a timely manner.
  • To ensure that the standard operating procedures would allow for a customs audit at any given time.
  • To develop a team of experienced, well-trained staff in an environment that allows for personal growth of each operator by ensuring proper training, regular evaluation, motivation, and mentoring.
Manage the overall financial- and accounting operations:
  • To ensure the timely invoicing of all shipments to adhere to the defined operational KPIs.
  • To resolve any accounting-related issues as they arise and to use the issues to diagnose and solve the deeper-rooted problem (operator knowledge and understanding).
  • To reconcile CASS statements, approve credit notes and invoice reversals.
  • To improve the overall invoicing standard that will require operators to provide supplemental documentation that would validate all applicable charges of a shipment (POD, detention invoice, EIR Tickets, Scale Tickets, etc.)
  • To maintain knowledge on all tariffs and licenses that will directly affect the good being imported.
Manage Customer and Vendor Management:
  • To establish a relationship with our vendors that will allow for better negotiating when it comes to rates with airlines, steamship lines, and subcontractors.
  • To develop an intimate knowledge of all contractual agreements with our vendors (airlines, SSLs. Subcontractors) to assist with the overall decision-making process.
  • To improve the overall customer experience by using the established tools to meet not only meet the minimum expectation, but to ensure customer satisfaction every single time.
  • To ensure that customers are kept well-informed of any new developments regarding their shipments.
  • To react in a timely manner to customer inquiries when it comes to invoicing- or operational-related issues and to keep record of these discrepancies Innovations and Incident Management (IIM) to ensure compliance with governing bodies and customer satisfaction.
  • To remain in touch with the activities of our competitors and industry trends by attending related events and functions when required.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • High school graduate
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree (preferred)
  • CargoWise experience (preferably CCO or CCS certified)
  • 2 years of industry experience (freight forwarding and management experience preferred)
