Scope of Responsibilities: The Director of Engineering must develop and sustain InterCool’s Engineering Business managing the contribution profit of the business. In addition, the position provides leadership and direction to the organization, engineering, pre-construction and design team responsible for refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, control system and IMP designs. This responsibility includes creating detailed schematics and drawings that are utilized in the field of construction of industrial and commercial refrigeration systems. These detailed technical drawings incorporate the input of engineers and specify dimensions, codes, materials, and installation methods.
The Director of Engineering will be the company lead and authority on these designs and applications. The role ensures that engineering deliverables provide sufficient details and references to support the construction and service activities within the company. The role will be a key cross-functional leader and will influence sales, pre-construction, construction, service, and compliance disciplines to support the companies, business plan priorities, and compliance plan objectives.
Essential Functions:
- Develop and manage the Engineering P&L.
- Work with Sales to develop and communicate Engineering Services.
- Assist in the development and winning of Engineering Service Opportunities.
- Lead and manage multiple direct reports including engineers and designers.
- Refrigeration system engineering and design shall include central ammonia systems, Freon -gas systems, CO2 systems, chilled glycol/water systems, dehumidification systems, process cooling systems and heat exchangers for various applications, etc.
- Work within the engineering, design, and construction teams to produce a cohesive and coordinated set of construction documents and project specifications.
- Work closely with Sales and Pre-construction bidding and proposal activities providing technical assistance, experience, and direction. Previous Sales and Pre-construction experience is a plus.
- Understanding and working knowledge of Process Safety Management and Risk Management Planning as it pertains to refrigeration systems.
- Develop & understand the unique skills and abilities of team members to assign work for efficient implementation & completion.
- Perform and complete performance reviews and development planning, training, and coaching for director reports.
- Provide companywide leadership, mentorship, and training to InterCool team members.
- Be the final authority on all engineering and design concepts, codes, and standards used within the company.
- Engineer, design, review and prepare rough sketches of refrigeration systems to include concept to final engineering.
- Engineer, design, review and prepare specifications to include concept to final engineering.
- Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for new and existing projects for refrigeration systems, architectural insulated panels, thermal pipe insulation and industrial HVAC systems.
- Review and edit standard details and assemblies for use on current projects and future projects.
- Select, prepare, and populate equipment, valve, and specialty assembly schedules.
- Review pre and post bid documentation, including bill of material, scope of work, estimates, bid drawings, specifications, and any additional associated documents to aid in the development of project specific engineering and design documentation.
- Engineer and design construction and fabrication drawing packages meeting the specified requirements, including cover sheet, specifications, plan views, elevations, sections, isometrics, details, flow diagrams, equipment and specialty schedules, P&IDs, AF&IDs, fabrication spools, etc.
- Lead and participate in project turn-in meetings, lead and/or participate in all design reviews, turnover meetings, and related project meetings.
- Ensure all designs pass through a quality gate system with the appropriate reviews and signoffs.
- Conduct quality checks, final engineering and design review on drawings and bill of materials.
- Conduct site surveys for pre-construction bidding and ongoing construction activities.
- Have a working knowledge of the codes and standards used throughout the US for refrigeration systems.
- Interface with appropriate internal and external groups in completion of tasks, as required.
- Prepare job documentation and equipment manuals at completion of job for customer.
- Perform special projects as assigned by management.
- Attend all company meetings and adhere to all safety practices and company policies.
- Complete all company mandated training and assessments, as required.
- Be willing to attend online industry training sessions, as required.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge and previous use of AutoCAD 2D/3D and Plant3D software (latest versions), you won’t be required to be the expert in these software packages, willingness to learn and train as needed.
- Working knowledge and previous use of Navisworks, BIM360, and Revit software (latest versions), you won’t be required to be the expert in these software packages, willingness to learn and train as needed.
- Excellent math, computation, and comprehension skills.
- Excellent geometry and blueprint reading skills (electronic and hard copy format).
- Expert skills and experience in thermal load calculations for refrigeration, mechanical and air handling systems.
- Expert skills and experience in moisture and humidity calculations for refrigeration, mechanical and air handling systems.
- Experience with hands-on industrial refrigeration mechanical engineering design, showing an ability to complete refrigeration system analysis, sizing, design, and production of construction documents, specifications, and reports.
- Experience in the design of refrigeration systems for food/beverage, pharma/life science, Petro-chemical industry is required.
- Adept in Microsoft Office Applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Explorer, Teams, etc.
- Adept in Bluebeam Revu (latest version).
- Adept in video conferencing technology and software such as Teams, Zoom, etc.
- Adept in effectively communicating to multiple team members located remotely.
- Knowledge of commercial/industrial building systems and construction techniques.
- Willing and able to travel as necessary for project requirements to include but not be limited to project installation and start-up activities, client meetings, company meetings, training, industry related seminars, forums, or conventions, etc. Candidates must be willing to travel throughout the US as needed to project sites and InterCool offices as needed.
- Candidate must possess the ability to climb ladders to equipment and roofs, maneuver through pipe racks, and work at heights wearing a harness.
- Previous experience doing field verifications and P&ID walk-downs required.
- Ability to understand and interpret technical documents and diagrams, including work instructions, manuals, specifications, blueprints, and schematics.
- This position requires extensive knowledge of mechanical refrigeration engineering and design principles and practices.
- Candidate must be willing to learn electrical, control, structural and other disciplines as needed.
- Ability to communicate and contract other engineering and architectural disciplines as needed and dictated by the project mix.

Education and Experience:
- B.S. Degree in Engineering from a four Accredited University engineering program, required.
- Mechanical engineering degree preferred but other engineering degrees with pertain experience will be considered.
- At least fifteen (15) years of relevant refrigeration experience working within the industry as a consulting engineer or within the design build refrigeration contractor arena, required.
- At least fifteen (15) years of experience managing highly technical individuals and teams in an engineering and design environment.
- Must have Professional Engineering license and be willing to obtain additional PE licensure in other states as needed by the company.
- Experience using 2D/3D CAD design software preferred.
- Industry working knowledge of industrial and commercial refrigeration systems required.
- Industry knowledge of ASME process related piping and vessels, required.
- Industry knowledge of ASME piping welding, fabrication and spools, preferred.
- Membership and Participation in IIAR and other recognized Industry Groups
Work Environment:
This job can be performed in one of our offices or from a remote home office with appropriate high-speed internet connection. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, video displays, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Some travel may be necessary to visit job sites, as needed.
