INTERFAITH ACTION OF CENTRAL TEXAS is Hiring a Summer Teacher Near Austin, TX

Summer Teacher

Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) is seeking a teacher for the iLearn Summer Refugee Youth Program teaching newly-arrived refugee students. Preference is for ESL or Special Ed focused teachers, especially ones with experience working for AISD.

iACT’s Youth Summer Program teaches basic language, math skills, and cultural orientation to newly arrived refugee children KG-12th grade who are new to Austin. Some may have never attended school in the United States before and need to be prepared for their first year of school.

The program runs for 7 weeks from June 24th through Aug. 8th, Monday- Thursday 9am-12pm. These times are flexible and may be different on field trip days. This will be in-person at our offices at 5307 Airport Blvd. There will be two teachers aided by interns, volunteers, and language interpreters.

The teacher will be one of two educators with the following duties (Approximately 100 hours):

· Preparing daily worksheets suitable for new English Language Learners of different ages

· Help create a pre and post-test to administer to all students to measure English learning

· Preparing and teaching a weekly cultural education topic related to school and life in the US

· Preparing for and taking the kids to weekly short outings

· Leading with second teacher on 2-3 Thursday full-day field trips

· Receiving and administering Food Bank lunches

iACT has worked with newly-arrived refugees of all ages for over 20 years and prides itself on creating a welcoming and caring environment for our clients. For this reason, we are seeking compassionate and friendly applicants able to work creatively and independently. Clients are refugees from different countries who have experienced danger and hardship and may have been traumatized. They had interrupted schooling and some may never have been to school. Cultural sensitivity and openness to diverse groups as well as discretion and privacy awareness are essential for applicants.
