Pay rate: $140,000 - $145,000
Since 1972, Interfaith Works (IW) has been meeting people where they are regardless of their challenges. We provide emergency shelter, supportive housing, essential needs, and employment programs to over 35,000 Montgomery County, MD, residents each year.
Our mission is to support our neighbors by providing vital services and a pathway to greater stability. Our clients and residents are served by 190 trained and professional staff members, as well as 7,000 volunteers. We also advocate for policies and programs that enhance the stability and opportunities of our neighbors.
Position Summary
The Director of Finance provides leadership and direction to IW regarding all financial matters. This role ensures that IW's business, financial, and grant practices are consistent and in compliance with industry, legal, and ethical standards. The Director oversees the effective management of the accounting and financial reporting functions. This position works in partnership with the Leadership team while managing three Finance team members. The nature of this work requires a Director who can adapt to a continually evolving and deadline-oriented environment.
Financial Management
  • Oversee financial systems, strategies, and activities as well as banking relationships.
  • Lead and supervise the finance team to ensure accurate and timely financial operations.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures for regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure efficient functioning and documentation for all financial systems.
  • Oversee payroll processing, which includes forecasting and ensuring accounts are properly funded.
  • Responsible for salary forecasting for budgetary purposes and contract management.
  • Oversee the overall month-end closing process in collaboration with the finance team.
  • Act as the custodian of all funds, ensuring proper cash controls are implemented to mitigate risk.
Planning and Strategic Engagements
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business processes, organization, programs, and initiatives of IW to provide strategic financial consulting, modeling, and financial analysis to the leadership team and Board.
  • Work with staff and Board to develop and implement IW budgets, including specific budgets by program.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the CEO and other Directors; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status.
  • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process with the CEO and other Directors and track performance relative to plan.
  • Represent IW to financial partners, including financial institutions, donors, auditors, etc.
  • Plan and lead annual audit and 990 preparation in collaboration with an independent audit firm.
  • Periodically lead internal audits to ensure compliance with financial standards and controls.
Administration and Management
  • Analyze complex financial and compliance requirements for contracts and grant agreements, etc.
  • Set standard approaches for budget and budget notes preparation and review.
  • Ensure an internal system is created to monitor grant fiduciary compliance.
  • Prepare systems to review and consistently monitor and report financial information for internal and external stakeholders. This includes monthly and ad hoc reports to internal stakeholders.
  • Continuously streamline operational processes to enhance accounting, financial planning, and analysis functions.
  • Attend regularly scheduled board meetings and participate in board presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills, Knowledge
  • Bachelor's Degree in a finance-related field and public accounting experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of broad nonprofit finance experience, including experience in gathering and evaluating complex financial information, managing staff as well as multiple funding sources, and making actionable recommendations to the CEO and Board. A detailed understanding of nonprofit finance and cost accounting functions is critical.
  • Experience in a senior financial management role, partnering with senior leadership, resulting in developing and implementing creative fiscal management strategies.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to collaborate with the leadership team on financial analysis and expense control. Capable of enforcing accountability, and ability to develop and empower leaders from the bottom up and lead from the top down.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and people management skills. IW is a collaborative environment, so understanding cooperative decision-making is important.
  • Ability to interface with existing and new technology trends related to finance and accounting.
  • Strong proficiency with Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Suite.
  • Highly organized, and self-motivated with attention to detail and a strong commitment to follow through.
