Job Summary:

The Assistant General Foreman aids in overseeing the daily functions of the Carman and the switching crew and coordinates with the third-party Car Cleaner Company. This position is also responsible for filling in for the General Foreman during their absence.

Pay: Starts at $25.40 an hour.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Acquire full understanding and support of Xanterra's Mission Statement, Core Values, and Cultural Pillars.
  • Communicate and organize daily goals, tasks, and routines to ensure employee safety and efficiency.
  • Oversee switching, inspection, maintenance, and repair of railway cars and locomotives.
  • Coordinates with third-party car cleaner company to ensure train cars meet cleanliness standards.
  • Accurately prepare necessary forms and reports associated with train car and/or locomotive inspection and repair.
  • Conduct job briefings throughout the day with staff and the management team.
  • Effectively delegate staff to complete daily tasks.
  • Attending management and staff meetings while communicating important information as required.
  • Carries out switchman, carman, and Engineering duties, as needed.
  • Support staff in necessary areas of labor as determined by daily duties.
  • Maintain employee confidentiality and ensure all confidential information is secure.
  • Cultivate a positive and professional work environment with staff and management.
  • Ensure that work is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with Management and HR to document, assess, and address, all employee concerns.
  • Ensure equipment is positioned for inspection, repair, and testing to meet the needs of the shift.
  • Assist General Forman in scheduling staff appropriately based on business projections.
  • Provide insight and recommendations to the management team regarding employees considered for promotion.
  • Ensure that staff is adhering to and in compliance with all prescribed Company, statutory/regulatory policies and procedures regarding worker safety, vehicle operation, risk management, and DOT regulations.
  • Works with the Management team and seeks ways to improve the current process to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Conduct GCORE and onboarding training with staff to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Ensure that staff are adhering to all prescribed Environmental Management Systems (EMS) policies and corporate commitments to maintain ISO 14001 goals and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Current Yard Engineer Certification or must achieve certification within 90 days of employment
  • Minimum of 2 years of railroad operation experience.
  • Must possess a valid and clear Arizona Driver’s License and comply with GCR Special Instructions and the Xanterra/GCR Vehicle Policy.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.

Employment Conditions:

  • Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries
  • Works safely and efficiently to ensure company equipment is safely secured at all times.
  • Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, and safety glasses as required by the job duties.
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
  • Complete annual training and pass the safety rules examination
  • Requires random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
  • Must pass all required assessments.
  • May require a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test
  • Work outside in all weather conditions, in confined spaces, and on occasion at elevated heights.
  • May be exposed to loud noise, fumes, and oils daily

Physical Requirements:

  • Heavy work, lifting and pulling up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb regularly.
  • Ability to walk one mile in under 20 minutes.
  • Walk long distances on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to set 5 hand breaks consecutively without stopping.
  • Ability to recognize and interpret audible, visual, and olfactory conditions, signals, and warnings. Ability to distinguish colors, signals, or signs from a distance and at night or in poor lighting conditions.
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis
