International Leadership of Texas is Hiring a Chinese Tutor Near Garland, TX

This is a temporary small group tutor role to support Mandarin Chinese instruction from June 3rd - June 20, 2024. Expected to work 2 - 3 hours per day.

This is a GRANT FUNDED position, as part of the STARTALK Program. STARTALK is a federal grant program funded by the National Security Agency with the objective of increasing the number of US citizens learning and teaching less commonly taught languages throughout our nation and inspiring those students to language careers, thereby contributing to language workforce development for the Federal Government.

Primary Purpose:

Provide Chinese language immersion environment to students under the direct supervision of a STARTALK administrator. Assist in student Chinese language speaking and listening activities in the evening and weekend.

Qualifications:

Must be U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident. Be open to residing in student apartments throughout the summer camp if required.

Education/Certification:

Associate degree or higher, or currently enrolled in a college or university.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to communicate effectively

Advanced proficiency in Chinese Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

Ability to assist in Chinese instruction

Ability to support students’ language learning

Knowledge of Chinese language

Knowledge of some Chinese arts, and cultural facts

Experience:

Some experience working with students in a classroom setting is preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:Instructional Support

1. Collaborate with the teacher to conduct language demonstrations.

2. Provide instructional support to students under the direction of the teacher and the chaperon, and work with individual students or small groups.

3. Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

4. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.

5. Assist teachers in fulfilling evening cultural projects and weekend activities.

6. Student Management

7. Assist students in completing evening activities and assignments.

8. Assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, a friendly attitude, and general guidance.

9. Assist in supervising students throughout the camp evening and weekend activities inside and outside the classroom.

10. Make teachers and chaperons aware of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other:

12. Participate in necessary training to improve job performance.

Additional Duties:

14. Any or all other duties as assigned by the STARTALK program supervisor.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment;

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
