PRIMARY PURPOSE

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned
  • Physical Education Teachers: Current automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate

Experience:
  • Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated competency in the core content area assigned
  • Minimum three (3) years successful teaching experience for core content teachers
  • Minimum three (3) years successful teaching experience and/or relative field experience for non-core/specialty areas preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional Strategies
  1. Teach the District's curriculum utilizing well-designed lesson plans and rigorous instruction combined with curriculum activities and instructional objectives that are standards-based, measurable, and accelerate the transfer of learning and knowledge
  2. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of student's assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations
  3. Develop instructional units and opportunities for enrichments, differentiations, and project-based learning to provide for collaboration, creative thinking, and extended interaction among students
  4. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities
  5. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  6. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements
Student Growth and Development
  1. Assess and document student mastery of curriculum objectives and student progress and growth utilizing frequent, appropriate, on-going and multiple assessment tools through interventions, and formal and informal assessment procedures, including standardized tests, formative assessments, performance tasks, enrichments and observations
  2. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal
  3. Be a positive role model for students; be professional in appearance, in manner, and in attitude; and support mission of school district
Classroom Management and Organization
  1. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  2. Execute and maintain appropriate student-centered discipline techniques and effective classroom management strategies to maximize student learning and time-on-task
  3. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook
  4. Engage parents and families in the academic and behavioral progress of their child by initiating parent conferences and providing opportunities for parents to continually support student learning and school programs
  5. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials, identifying and using community resources consistent with the objectives of the class
  6. Maintain accurate and efficient record-keeping of official attendance records, grade reports, student files, documentation of state and local assessment preparation and other appropriate documents
Communication
  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members
  2. Demonstrate consistent loyalty to district, school, colleagues, and profession, being highly positive and supportive in staff relationships
Professional Growth and Development
  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
  2. Attend and participate in faculty and professional learning community (PLC) meetings and serve on staff committees as required
  3. Contribute ideas, work on committees, collaborate with peers, participate in curriculum development and revision activities as appropriate, and attend district and campus professional development activities demonstrating a commitment to personal and professional growth and development (including summer professional development)
Other
  1. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers
  2. Assume other duties as assigned by the principal and the Superintendent of Schools
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct the work of instructional aide(s)

EVALUATION: The Classroom Teacher's evaluation is a responsibility resting with the campus principal. An evaluation shall be completed in writing at least once during the course of each school year

Tools/Equipment Used:
Personal computer and peripherals, and other instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist nonambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment; may work prolonged or irregular hours
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards
