Job Overview

The Accounting Department is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented professional to join our team as an Administrative Accountant. The administrative accountant is a staff level position that reports to the Chief Accountant.

The Administrative Accountant should be a self-starting individual with strong time management, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.

They will work with a team of talented bookkeepers to oversee travel-related expenses and administer the UAW’s employee credit card program. This position serves as the primary contact for expense reimbursement questions from staff and administrative support employees, including questions regarding expense reports in process, and providing follow-up for expenses that require further documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review expense reports to ensure accuracy of the information provided and compliance with the UAW Travel & Expense Reimbursement Policy and procedures.
  • Ensure that appropriate approvals have been obtained and that expenditures are for authorized business purposes, consistent with internal policies.
  • Administer employee credit card program including issuing new cards, revoking existing cards, modifying card strategies and credit limits, consistent with internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist in updating the SAP Concur expense system to reflect changes in the Travel & Expense Reimbursement Policy or Collective Bargaining Agreements, ensuring changes are carried out in a timely manner and communicated effectively.
  • Maintain an excellent customer service mentality by interacting professionally and positively with all employees and external stakeholders in a confidential and sensitive manner.
  • Exercises good judgement in interpreting and applying UAW policies, and recommend changes or amendments to policy as required, based on communications with organizational stakeholders.
  • Identify areas for process improvement and discuss opportunities with the Chief Accountant.
  • Develop and maintain documentation regarding expense reimbursements, including training materials, standard operating procedures, correspondence, and documentation on the Concur expense reporting system.
  • Provide training to staff and clerical on the travel and expense policy and the process for submitting travel and expense reimbursements.
  • Liaison between internal and/or external auditors and Accounting team members to provide documentation as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support month-end and year-end financial close and reporting processes.
  • Preparing journal entries and account reconciliations

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • At least two years’ experience in accounting or a related field
  • Strong analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize effectively to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to different situations, processes and technology while remaining positive, calm, and levelheaded.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of employee and company information
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with others

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position, based at our Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The UAW offers a starting salary of $111,760 with a 3-year progression to $124,178, along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits. Relocation is available.
