Job DescriptionLaboratory Technician IIntertek, a leading provider of ATIC (Assurance, Testing, Inspection, and Certification) Services, is looking for a Laboratory Technician I to join our Industrial Services team in Pittsburgh, PA.Intertek’s Industry Services team uses expert technical knowledge of industries such as oil & gas, power generation, renewable energy, chemical, construction and transportation to provide a diverse range of innovative Total Quality Assurance solutions that optimize operations while minimizing risks in quality, safety and cost. Some of our key services include vendor inspection, site construction services, asset integrity management, non-destructive & materials testing, 3D laser scanning & dimensional control and energy & water consulting services.
How you’ll make an impact at Intertek:Listed examples are illustrative, and representative of the tasks required of this position and are not intended to be complete or exclusive. Duties may include the following:
  • To receive, examine, and record through a log-in process, inbound items for testing.
  • To deliver test samples to the sample staging area.
  • To monitor the availability of the supplies needed for the testing processes, and to make any needs for such supplies known to Laboratory Management.
  • To prepare samples and quality control specimens, to prepare and standardize reagents and solutions, and to calibrate equipment needed for the testing processes.
  • To perform testing of samples and quality control specimens using specified methodology; field retrieval of cored materials, core handling-plugging-slabbing-description, fluid saturation determination, measurements of petrophysical properties such as porosity-permeability-grain density.
  • To verify and communicate the results obtained, and to make the appropriate entries into instrument logs, control charts, calibration records, laboratory worksheets, and any other media, whether print or electronic, required to ensure the validity and traceability of the information.
  • To maintain documentation, equipment, and work areas in a neat and orderly condition.
  • To assist in the training of less experience employees.
  • To carry out the above responsibilities, and all others which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the Company’s Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and strategy, and to exercise good judgment, commons sense, and diplomacy in so doing.
What it takes to be successful in this role:
  • SCAL Laboratory Technician should have a High School diploma (or GED) with course work in science and mathematics. College level geosciences courses encouraged.
  • Although an entry level position, any prior laboratory experiences in core analysis a solid plus.
  • Must have a grasp of basic mathematics, must be trainable in the practical aspects of the job.
  • The Technician must be physically able to do the work required; some heavy lifting, potential for field work at drilling rig locations onshore and offshore-foreign and domestic operations.
  • Must perform work safely while handling coring equipment, crude oils, gases, acids and other oil field chemicals.
  • Possessing a mechanical aptitude a solid plus.
  • Ability to use Excel and Word to record and process lab data.
  • The Laboratory Technician should have a positive attitude, a high tolerance for job pressure and occasional long hours.
  • The ability for working and communicating with persons of diverse personalities and backgrounds.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull 30 to 50 pounds frequently. Occasionally, over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, (hearing) and to make the discriminations in sound.
  • Ability to kneel and squat occasionally
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb occasionally
