Job Description

The Exhibition Fabricator position is part of a collaborative team who develop and maintain temporary and permanent exhibitions on a de-commissioned aircraft carrier that is a national historic landmark.

The Exhibition Fabricator plays a critical role in the preparation, fabrication, installation, and daily maintenance of museum exhibitions according to current best practices. This full-time position is responsible for adhering to production schedules, safe shop and worksite practices, to ensure timely and accurate production and installation of exhibition elements. The Fabricator provides daily oversight of functionality of shop equipment and materials stock. It requires some overtime during evenings, and weekends to meet production and project schedules. Superb design document reading and interpretation skills are required, along with strong geometry and measurement skills for all aspects of fabrication, site survey, and installation. The individual must effectively identify project challenges and solutions while delivering a high quality project. This individual must be able to create basic shop drawings from verbal instruction as required and have the ability review and mark up shop drawings to identify possible edits prior to fabrication. This position must be able to prepare CNC cut files from prepared digital design documents with accuracy. The Exhibition Fabricator must maintain clear and orderly files of all physical and digital asset documents used in the fabrication and installation of exhibitions.

The Exhibition Fabricator provides guidance to fabrication assistants, temporary workers, fabrication vendors, and exhibition volunteers to ensure the accurate production and delivery of exhibition elements on time and on budget. The fabricator must be an effective communicator (oral and written) with project stakeholders. This position requires a creative, self-starter with great time management, problem solving, communication, and organizational skills who can work both independently and with a team.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Supports daily efforts to create prototypes, fabricate exhibition elements, and maintain current exhibitions to ensure the quality of the visitor experience.

• Supports the planning, fabrication, installation of temporary and permanent exhibitions.

• Facilitates the production of a wide range of exhibit components, including cases, bases, props, interactives, wall elements, stanchions, signage, etc.

• Works with the Lead Fabricator and Exhibition Designer to plan, source, produce prototypes, create shop drawings, proposals, material schedules, production schedules, and installation schedules to support the development, build, installation, maintenance, and de-installation of exhibitions.

• Creates exhibition material and equipment lists as required for the timely success of the exhibition build and upkeep.

• Coordinates temporary exhibition staff, part-time help, and exhibition volunteers to aid in the production, installation, and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

• Operates equipment and machinery such as but not limited to, scissor lift, forklift, table saw, CNC, plasma cutter, laser cutter, vacuum press, drill press, band saw, and other hand and power tools as needed.

• Must be able to speak effectively before other team members to communicate design / build/ installation intent, progress, concepts, identified delays, and solutions.

• Must be able to read and create design documents to support the design, fabrication, and installation of exhibitions, along with the ability to interpret and translate to physical structures.

• Must have superior working knowledge of geometry and dimensioning skills.

• Must be able to maintain production schedule and quality of fabrication at all times.

• Ability to pivot projects as required due to changes in project and museum goals.

• Performs other duties as required by management.

Qualified candidates will have a BS/BA degree from an accredited college, university, or equivalent with a minimum of four years’ of direct experience in all aspects of museum quality fabrication and installation. Candidates must have prior experience with CAD/CAM related fabrication equipment and methods.
