DIRECTOR - HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTSummaryThe Director of Health, Safety & Environment is responsible for leading and implementing company HS&E programs in support of pharmaceutical research and development and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Major areas of responsibility include biological safety, chemical safety, fire code compliance, hazardous waste management, hazard communication, industrial hygiene assessment, injury and illness prevention, radiation safety, respiratory protection, and vivarium safety.
This position will report to the Executive Director of Health, Safety & Environment.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise site HS&E team members and contractor staff.
  • Design, develop and deliver safety training programs for site employees and contractors.
  • Maintain and develop HS&E management system.
  • Serve as primary site contact for regulatory inspections and partner audits.
  • Maintain site regulatory licenses, registrations and permits.
  • Oversee required regulatory and program reporting.
  • Conduct site compliance audits to identify potential workplace hazards, program deficiencies, and liabilities.
  • Perform job hazard analysis, industrial hygiene assessments and ergonomic evaluations.
  • Provide occupational health program support for research animal vivarium.
  • Ability to be on call 24/7 to respond to company-related HS&E emergencies.
  • Assemble, train, and lead emergency response team at site.
  • Oversee hazardous waste management (biological, chemical, universal wastes).
  • Serve as site radiation safety officer.
  • Conduct investigation of employee injuries/near miss incidents, root cause. determination, and identification of corrective actions.
  • Injury reporting and oversight of workers compensation program.
  • Collect site-specific GHG emission metrics for ESG reporting.
  • Monitor and assess existing and emerging HS&E regulations and determine appropriate policy and procedures for regulatory compliance.
  • Fire code compliance.
  • Workers’ compensation program support.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years experience in HS&E roles in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation required.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and industry standards.
  • Proven track record as a self-starter with a strong sense of responsibility and ownership of HS&E programs.
  • Expertise across multiple HS&E disciplines including biosafety, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, vivarium safety.
  • Capability to lead the site Emergency Response Team, with demonstrated ability to manage chemical and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment and ability to meet fast-track timelines.
  • Strong leadership skills, including effective communication and the skill to influence across all hierarchical levels of the organization, including upper management and researchers.
  • Capability to effectively collaborate with other HS&E team members, e.g. mentoring, advising, supporting, etc., to maintain a strong HS&E management culture.
