Job Title: Part-Time Organ Utilization Specialist

Location: Remote

Schedule : Average of 8 shifts/month

*Training may take place on day and night shift

Hours: Combination of 6am-6pm CST and 6pm-6am CST

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Salary: Starting at $31.30 hourly

Position Summary:

The Organ Utilization Specialist directs the allocation of organs from organ donors to potential transplant centers and coordinates import organ offers on behalf of transplant centers. The ideal OUS candidate will possess knowledge related to United Network of Organization Sharing (UNOS) regulations, donor evaluation and management, authorization, and organ allocation for transplant and research/education. The OUS effectively identifies and communicates vital clinical information and serves as the primary point of contact during the organ import and organ allocation processes. Our primary focus is to provide a consistent service that is accurate and timely enabling our counterparts to effectively make decisions that yield optimal organ transplant results. Essential Functions and Performance Responsibilities:
  • Precisely communicates applicable donor information to members of the recipient care team and/or external partners to minimize organ cold ischemia time and allow for maximization of organ placement.
  • Document clinical and logistical information in iTransplant system accurately and promptly.
  • Analyze donor charts and review all necessary clinical/social information ensuring accuracy to generate match runs in UNET.
  • Consults the OUS Manager, OUS Team Lead and/or ORS to identify case-specific barriers to organ utilization to minimize risk of organ discard and maximize opportunities for transplantation.
  • Manages import organ referrals for designated transplant hospitals and decipher donor clinical data to accept/decline organ offers.
  • Actively participates in departmental meetings, continuing education opportunities, quality assurance initiatives, and required training.
  • Identifies and reports adverse events and identifies process improvement opportunities with an emphasis on improved organ utilization and patient safety.
  • Ensures compliance with current federal, state, and/or local laws and regulations including Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and Iowa Donor Network’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate level of confidentiality in all areas dealing with sensitive, protected, and confidential information.
Position Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, healthcare studies, or biology. or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience within an OPO, preferably within an organ allocation work system.
  • CPTC, CCTN, CCTC, or CTP certification preferred.
  • Experience with medical interpretation of lab values, diagnostic testing, human anatomy, and medical terminology.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Participates in operational schedule as necessary; to include nights, weekends, and holiday coverage. At peak times, may be called to provide assistance when not scheduled.
  • Maintains effective and professional communication with all individuals included in the organ donation process.
  • A strong ability to pivot seamlessly from task to task excelling under strict time constraints with perseverance and integrity.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to manage critical situations simultaneously while making judgements that align with Iowa Donor Network core values.
  • Effective problem solving, conflict management and creative thinking skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Proven skill and competence in using technology-based devices such as personal computers and related software, and mobile phones.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must receive required vaccines based on outlined schedules to protect our employees, healthcare personnel, donors, recipients, and families we may come into contact. (e.g., Influenza obtained annually by December 1st.)
  • This position requires the extensive use of computers, telephones, and other office equipment while sitting for long hours. Must be able to stay focused and attentive.
  • At peak times, may be called to provide assistance when not scheduled.
  • Lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Receive detailed information through oral and auditory communication.
