AARP is Hiring a Publications Design Intern Near Washington, DC

Overview:

AARPs Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) Group includes Membership, Content and Editorial, Customer Experience, External Relations, Brand Strategy and Strategic Communications. Across paid, earned, shared and owned channels, ICM manages AARPs reputation, drives engagement and member growth, and showcases AARPs mission and value through one, integrated voice.

Are you a design student with solid Adobe Creative Suite skills who is creative, organized, results-driven, and passionate about storytelling? The AARP Publications Design team is looking for you! Our team directs the design for AARP The Magazine (the largest circulated magazine in the world), the AARP Bulletin, and several digital newsletters (The Girlfriend, Sisters, The Ethel, and Experience Counts). We also provide creative support for promotional collateral, social media graphics, and special projects (print and digital). Responsibilities:

The Editorial Design Intern will assist our busy department with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

  • Help to design and develop print and digital layouts for AARP The Magazine and the AARP Bulletin
  • Assist with creating and assigning illustrations for all platforms (print, social media, website, and the magazines app)
  • Attach text to CPS (AARPs Content Publishing System) layouts; training provided.
  • Heavily involved in creating social media assets and digital ads
  • Enter artist contracts into our database
  • Upload imagery to the digital asset management system
Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • In-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite programsespecially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustratoris required; knowing After Effects is a plus
  • Familiarity with CPS/Censhare is a plus but not required (we will train)
  • Knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus
  • Must be a self-starter, able to multitask and work within tight deadlines
  • Must enjoy collaborating and working as part of a team
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be comfortable communicating with outside vendors (Illustrators, photographers, etc.)
  • The schedule is flexible; the Design Team works remotely on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; Thursdays are often a telework day. Must be in person for at least one day a week

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
