Position Summary:: Performs a variety of construction and maintenance duties, including operations of light equipment in the gas system. Criteria: Education & Experience: High school diploma (GED). Preference will be given to those individuals with two years of construction and/or maintenance experience. Skills & Abilities: Good mechanical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Certifications/Licenses: Gas Operator Qualification within one year. CPR Certification. Plastic Fusion Certification. TDOT Flagger Certification. Physical Demands: The ability to lift, carry, and use heavy tools and materials. The ability to climb and perform work from a ladder. The ability to safely operate a standard equipped JEA motor vehicle. The ability to safely operate specially equipped JEA construction/maintenance equipment. The ability to operate JEA field service installation equipment. The ability to orally communicate via radio and telephone. The ability to walk several miles over rough terrain. The ability to enter/exit 22" diameter accessways as well as work in confined spaces. The ability to see and read printed material. Work Environment: Indoor/outdoor and all-weather conditions. Exposure to high voltage, the risk of gas fire/explosion, wastewater, and cave-ins. Location and work hours are determined by Management and may be adjusted as needed. Driving: Must have and maintain a valid Tennessee class “A” license with a “Government Only” endorsement within six months of employment. Telephone: Must maintain an operating telephone and furnish the number to his/her supervisor and Systems Dispatch. Essential Functions:
Makes taps on gas.
Installs new gas mains, services, regulators, meters, valves, and dresser couplings.
Runs new steel and plastic services.
Uses plastic squeeze-off tools properly.
Attends monthly safety meetings.
On a 24/7 call basis.
Works overtime during emergencies when needed.
Keeps assigned vehicles and equipment clean and in proper working order.
Properly applies coating to steel gas mains.
Maintains high pressure, low pressure, and medium pressure gas mains and service lines.
Catches hot gas lines.
Operates tapping machine both large and small, trenchers, pipe saws, air compressors, pumps, welder, air boring (piercing) tool, gas or air tamp, and generators.
Performs daily walkaround of trucks and trailers.
Operates truck and trailer combination.
Observes proper traffic control, shoring, and trenching procedures.
Keeps truck stocked.
Organizes tools and materials.
Cleans tools, equipment, grounds, and other facilities.
Investigates and establishes severity of leak and takes appropriate action.
Analyzes problems and determines materials needed for repairs.
Makes repairs and checks using standard operating procedures.
