Job Description

Job Summary

This is an entry level accounting position dealing with confidential, high quantity, time-sensitive accounting activities. The work requires an understanding and application of the theories, principles, and practices of accounting and financial management evidenced by a combination of education, training and related job experience. This position may oversee work performed by others. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication in dealing with others. Work is performed in an office environment. The work requires use of personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database and various accounting software programs. The physical demands consist mainly of sitting or standing at a work station for extended periods of time, using standard office equipment on an ongoing basis, and occasionally lifting and moving light objects. The work is performed under administrative direction where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, precedents, methods, techniques, standards, and/ or well-defined policies. The work is reviewed in terms of meeting requirements or expected results.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains and audits, financial records, accounts, ledgers, and journals
  • Develops new and modifies existing accounting procedures
  • Analyzes accounting and fiscal data, records and reports
  • Prepares journal entries and posts transactions to proper accounts
  • Prepares summaries, trial balances, and related reports and statements
  • Conducts field audits and prepares comprehensive reports
  • Reconciles and balances financial statements and accounting records and ledgers
  • Operates personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database and various accounting software
  • May certify and/or supervise preparation and maintenance of time and leave reports, payroll records and pay vouchers
  • Prepares and monitors operating budgets
  • Composes correspondence
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 2 years of experience in accounting that included auditing, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and/or payroll or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of governmental accounting and auditing principles, practices, procedures, methods, and theory

  • Skill in operating standard office equipment and personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and various accounting software

  • Ability to analyze and audit accounting, fiscal, payroll and leave data and reports
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply job related rules, policies and procedures

  • Ability to develop computer-based spreadsheets, graphs, summaries, and reports
