Job Summary

The Office of External Affairs oversees University Advancement, Marketing, Communications, Government Relations, Economic Development, and Community Engagement and leads engagement efforts for Jacksonville University. The Office of External Affairs develops, shapes, and oversees communications, connections, and engagement within and beyond campus to enhance the University’s reputation, drive revenue, and advance its mission and vision.

The Associate Vice President of External Affairs reports to the Senior Vice President of External Affairs. This role is uniquely positioned to strengthen the organization’s most valuable relationships, initiate executive level engagement, provide counsel on comprehensive fundraising, and tactical execution on critical matters. In this role, this position will be charged with the strategic development of a principal gift pipeline and serve as a principal gifts fundraiser.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities in order to maximize external engagement with prospects, donors and high-level constituents

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Counsel
    • Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic collaborator to the President and University leadership supporting the implementation of the University’s vision and priorities, comprehensive campaign goals and other initiatives deemed appropriate by the President.
    • Responsible for the provision of high-level advice and comprehensive research to inform strategic approach by the President and University leadership on all matters related to comprehensive solicitations.
    • Influences the prioritization of the President and University leadership’s engagement with external constituents.
      Serves as a fundraising coach on principal gifts; leads strategies that include highly complex gift discussions and interactions with donors capable of making significant contributions across campus
  • Priority Engagement
    • Facilitates and oversees the engagement of prospects within the principal pipeline working with the Office of the President, External Affairs and University Advancement closely.
    • Communicates effectively and develops outreach plans with Advancement and Marketing and Communications teams as needed.
    • Identifies and implements meaningful engagements opportunities with the Senior Director of External Engagement to further cultivation and stewardship for as deemed appropriate (speaking engagements, campus tours, board engagement, Global Citizen, invitations, etc.).
    • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of stewardship communications and interactions between the University and the donor by working closely with the Director of Communications, Director of Donor Engagement and Senior Director of External Engagement.
  • Presidential Fundraising/ Principal Gift Strategy
    • Develop and implement fundraising strategies and activities for prospects who can give at the $1 million level and above, including foundations (corporate and family), high net-worth individuals, and organizations.
    • Coordinates the stewardship of all principal gift donors as well as the work of all development officers on gifts of this level of sophistication.
    • Facilitates interaction of principal level prospects with the President, Senior Vice President of External Affairs, senior administrators and deans, and faculty.
    • Develop and solicit an increasingly refined and well-researched pool of transformational principal gift prospects ($1,000,000 ) warranting presidential involvement and attention as well advise the President’s portfolio strategy of cultivation and solicitation.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising with a proven track of success securing 8-figure gifts.
  • Experience supporting an institutional fundraising division.
  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
