This opportunity will provide systems engineering support to the Systems Planning and Technical Leadership Branch, the Definition and Integration Branch, and the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) Office, to assist the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) flight demonstration insight effort and help prepare the Nuclear Propulsion Technology Maturation (NPTM) Project to enter Formulation Phase.Personnel will provide leadership and support for the development of systems engineering and project planning products for the SNP Office and shall support subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured.

 

Responsibilities:

 Specific support to be provided includes the following:

  •  Coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers as well as participate in reviews, technical interchange meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies.
  •  Supply leadership and support for the development of key systems engineering products including implementation of Model Based Systems Engineering for technical and strategic support to the SNP program and project milestone events.
  • Develop strategy models using MBSE tools such as MagicDraw to create and maintain a comprehensive roadmap for SNP.
  • Use tools such as MagicDraw to create and maintain an architecture model for the DRACO technology demonstrator.
  • Develop these products in support of key project milestones, including preparation and delivery of technical programmatic briefings.
  • Support design reviews to ensure hardware, software, and interface requirements as well as operations engineering requirements in the architecture model are addressed.
  • Exercise technical aerospace engineering and/or nuclear propulsion knowledge, insight, and judgment, to identify technical issues/risks, technology readiness levels, performance deficiencies, and design faults on systems, equipment, and/or hardware.
  • Provide support pertaining to requirements analysis, modeling and simulation, and technical implementation of verification methods, as appropriate.
  • Evaluate design requirements and constraints under which systems and equipment must operate, as appropriate.
  • Prepare and deliver technical programmatic briefings, as requested.

Here’s what you’ll need:

A degree in aerospace, mechanical, systems or a related engineering field or discipline is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 10 years of experience, or a master’s with at least 8 years of relevant experience. 
A successful candidate must have:
  • Systems engineering and integration experience.
  • Practical experience using Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) including the implementation of MBSE tools, such as MagicDraw and Cameo.
  • Strong understanding on the fundamentals of risk management, lifecycle planning, and milestone review planning.
  • Ability to provide engineering context to both technical documentation and stakeholder discussions.
  • Excellent writing skills with demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive level briefings, well-honed interpersonal and negotiation skills, complex technical problem-solving skills, and customer relations skills.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & Outlook) are required.
  • Must be self-motivated, effective team players familiar with working in a dynamic work environment. 

Desired qualifications and experience (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as a selection factor):

  • 15 Years of Systems Engineering and integration experience.
  • 5 Years of experience leading Technical Teams.
  • General knowledge of nuclear propulsion and rocket engine testing.
  • Experience translating complex issues into cohesive, actionable components.
  • Critical thinking skills and effective problem-solving experience with hardware testing and engine design.
  • Experience communicating and interacting with stakeholders, customers, and/or NASA’s international partners.

Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job.
