Job DescriptionThe duties of a manager are similar in nature of those of a senior, but they cover a broader area. He or she has demonstrated an ability to assume full responsibility for directing engagements and special assignments, and can review workpapers, financial statements, and reports of discussions with clients.

Such an individual follows the progress of the engagement and helps resolve accounting and auditing problems as they arise. The manager has responsibility for complying with pronouncements of professional and other regulatory groups.
Among the manager's duties are any or all of the following:
  • Coordinate the various phases of an engagement, including staff requirements, locations to be visited, and job planning and scheduling, with the manager or partner. Plan the logistics of the engagement, including the work performed by others.
  • Study and evaluate the internal controls used by the client, and prepare or review the audit program and time budget (for subsequent approval by a partner).
  • Assign work to staff members on the basis of their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Support the training of staff members; offer guidance and direction, and constructive criticism of workpapers.
  • Evaluate workpapers and determine whether the audit was performed in accord with generally accepted standards.
  • Review with the senior manager or partner any significant audit findings that raise questions involving accounting principles or statement presentation.
  • Prepare or review financial statements, notes, schedules, and management letters for later discussion between the senior manager or partner and the client. In some instances the manager may discuss these matters with the client.
  • Prepare a constructive discussion of staff evaluation reports.
  • Serve in educational programs as an instructor or discussion leader.
