MARKETING AT JDI
At JDI we love two things: science and the art of communication.
We’re a boutique marketing firm; our mission is to make precedent setting science companies well known and understood. We aim to become the best marketing agency for science companies, and leave the world a better place.
We are seeking a well-rounded and experienced marketer with an interest in science. If you’re our ideal candidate, you have experience in marketing as well as these qualities:
People who thrive at JDI have a natural and wide-ranging curiosity. They are driven to continuously improve their craft. They are eager to be accountable for results for our clients and are comfortable making decisions, even in the face of ambiguity. They build healthy relationships with clients and their colleagues.
Working at JDI means getting to be a part of a lot of exciting projects at once. Marketers at JDI spend their days on both strategy and execution: pitching journalists, writing editorial content, researching science and technologies and trends, debating ideas, developing strategies, brainstorming ad campaigns and advising our clients. We name and brand companies, write web copy, and work closely with the press. No two days are the same.
If you join our 25-person team, some of your time will be spent working alone, but the majority will be spent collaborating with others and meeting with clients. Our goal is to bring on a team member who is intellectually curious and willing to share unique perspectives.
MORE ABOUT JDI
Our typical client has made a breakthrough and is looking to turn their innovation into a product or service they can sell. They usually lack an internal marketing team, and that’s where we come in. Some current clients include: Brane Audio, Terra CO2, WorldQuant University, and A-Alpha Bio.

Working in science and technology means that it’s often difficult to distill what our clients do into simple, clear language. One of the joys of our work is when a complex scientific breakthrough is made clear, relevant, and compelling to a wide audience. Another challenge is figuring out who the customer is, and what they want — sometimes the breakthrough is so new that it’s not immediately clear who has the need for it.
Rarely do our clients have a field of competitors that closely resemble them; their marketing challenge is more immediately telling the world what is possible because of their invention. That means our work is constantly pushing the bounds of marketing – unique challenges require unique and well-executed solutions.
We do our work across the marketing spectrum — everything from traditional PR, design and development, product strategy, naming and branding, original market research and audience development, messaging and positioning, user acquisition and retention, advisory board development, venture capital fundraising, executive recruitment, business development, and more.
We’re also a design firm, and one of the unique parts of the role is the close relationship you will have with designers. Our designers put message and content first and foremost, and as such work hand-in-hand with marketers.
We’re a small company where people look after one another, and where we all can grow, personally and professionally. We believe in telling the truth and giving good advice. You can read our company values and mission here.
We’re a quirky bunch of folks: two of us grew up on farms, and another of our team members was — literally — raised in a zoo. In our free time, we do everything from write music reviews for the Austin Chronicle to teach horseback riding at a therapeutic riding center. In our early careers we drove busses, captained ships, and slung coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. Our Slack workspace has optional channels where we talk about everything from food to politics to community involvement opportunities and things to read.
At JDI, we believe in building a diverse team; our differences inspire creative thinking and improve our ideas. Part of our ongoing work is to examine our unconscious biases, create a safe environment where everyone can work at their best, and ensure that identity is never a barrier to advancement. We appreciate candidates who are returning to the workforce after having children or being a caretaker. We know that differently-abled candidates are assets to our team. We support Fair Chance principles and we are an equal opportunity employer.
RESPONSIBILITIES
You will balance strategy and tactics on a daily basis. You’re expected to do the work of creating press lists, drafting press releases, and writing pitches as much as you’re expected to help develop and drive the overall marketing strategy. You’ll do a lot of persuasive writing including client counsel, thought leadership, and ad copy. You’ll be a strong counselor to your client in email, in-person, and on calls, communicating directly and truthfully.
You’ll collaborate with a variety of clients, each with a different set of team members. On average, you’ll be working on eight client accounts at any given time.
On some of those accounts, you’ll be the lead, and will manage the program with client goals and budget in mind. You’ll also be responsible for delegating work to the other people on your account (usually 2-4 people), and making sure that work gets done on time and that our baseline materials (press release, press list, messaging, and other core work) is up to standard. On other accounts, you’ll be supporting another account lead.
JDI will grow and test your leadership skills. Part of your role will be setting the pace and tone for your accounts and mentoring junior colleagues. We strive to be the best, which means that giving and receiving feedback is essential at all levels of the company.
Agency life, at JDI or anywhere, is fast-paced with many quick-turn deadlines and competing priorities. Our clients need our best effort. That said, what matters most to us is not flawless performance, but the willingness to dive in and meet challenges head on, handle setbacks, and adjust course when necessary.
