Metallurgical Lab Technician
Summary:
Perform general metallographic lab duties including cutting, mounting, polishing, etching, and evaluating heat treat, fusion weld, resistance weld, hot form, EDM, and laser samples. Understand and apply customer and industry specifications and requirements. Perform testing required for chemical processes including titrations and making up etchants for lab and weld operations. Perform all material, hardware, and processing certification review. Able to read, understand and apply blueprint and customer requirements. The position reports directly to the Metallurgical Lab Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties:
· Demonstrate proficiency to be certified for routine alpha case/surface evaluation samples and maintain annual round robin testing/certification, accurately report results.
· Prepare metal specimens for evaluation to customer/industry requirements: microstructure, surface contamination, IGA, IGO, weld quality, etc.
· Demonstrate proficiency in validating and using metallograph and stereomicroscopes. Must be capable of obtaining consistent and accurate measurements.
· Perform XRF testing, standardize instrument, accurately report results.
· Perform testing supporting solution control of clean line process including performing titrations, recommending tank adjustments, and ordering supplies.
· Perform routine pH testing, standardize meter.
· Obtain, test, report, and file required quarterly, and periodic reports required by customer or specification.
· Perform detailed review of process, material, and hardware certifications against purchase order criteria to assure full compliance with end use customer and industry requirements.
· Prepare samples, write requisitions for outside testing. Review and approve reports upon receipt.
· Organize and maintain systems for storing and filing samples, certifications, flags, reports, daily records, etc.
· Participate in hazardous materials and chemical cage management in accordance with established procedures.
· Shall assist in customer and third party (i.e., NADCAP) audits related to internal and vendor process control activities.
· Inventory and order supplies as needed.
· Other duties as required.
· Failure to maintain certification(s) may be cause for dismissal.
Qualifications:
· Must possess knowledge of the manufacturing processes employed at Jedco and customer requirements associated with those processes.
· Must have excellent communication and organizational skills aligned with essential duties and responsibilities.
· To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s Degree preferred – Metallurgy, Chemistry, or similar.
· Associate’s degree minimum and/or equivalent experience.
· College level chemistry is required and/or equivalent experience.
· Must be able to communicate fluently in English (read, write, verbal).
· Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel at a minimum.
· Blueprint reading.
· HazMat training
· Knowledge and/or experience with aerospace fusion and resistance welding, hot forming of titanium, stress corrosion testing of titanium, acid cleaning of titanium, cleaning of aluminum and alkali cleaning highly desirable.
· Experience with metal heat treatment including interpretation of heat treat results (charted time, temperature, vacuum levels) highly desirable.
