Classification Summary
The Director of Student Wellness and Counseling Services at Jefferson College coordinates student wellness and counseling services, serves as the College’s primary therapist, and acts as the liaison with contracted services. Responsibilities include training and supervising graduate trainees, chairing the Vikings Care subcommittee, and ensuring compliance with Partners in Prevention (PIP) responsibilities. The role involves providing short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and emergency services coordination while maintaining confidentiality and legal reporting requirements. The Director also participates in research, prepares annual reports, and collaborates with administrators on strategic planning and program evaluation. Additionally, the position requires developing community relationships and maintaining comprehensive case records.
Minimum Education and/or Training and Experience
  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, clinical psychology, counselor education, marriage and family therapy, or other closely related mental health disciplines from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and be licensed/certified to practice within their specialty. If necessary, appropriate supervision must be provided until licensure/certification is obtained.
  • Documentation of supervised experience at the graduate level in the provision of mental health services is required.
  • Must have completed appropriate graduate coursework and demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in psychological assessment, theories of personality, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, human development, learning theory, counseling theory, and/or other appropriate subjects.
  • Must have had a supervised internship or equivalent experience with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of program development, consultation, outreach, developmental theories, and be able to understand the individual in the context of a diverse social and cultural environment.
  • Personal attributes that enable them to facilitate effective interpersonal relationships and to communicate with a wide range of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Appropriate graduate degree, experience training other professionals, and licensure and/or appropriate certification in chosen mental health field.
Preferred Education and/or Training and Experience
  • Experience in higher education counseling.
  • One year of leadership experience.
  • Experience with developing and implementing prevention programming in higher education.
  • Experience working in a community college setting.
  • Experience with cultural competence in working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities.
Licensing Requirements
MO State Independently Licensed, LPC or LCSW.
Essential Job Function
These are the job duties that are required of the position.
Classification Duties
  • Lead the coordination of Jefferson College’s Student Wellness and Counseling Services and serve as the liaison between the College and any contracted student wellbeing and counseling services. Provide appropriate training and supervision to graduate trainees and/or contracted support, when applicable. (C4)
  • Chair the Vikings Care student wellbeing subcommittee/coalition. Ensure compliance with Partners in Prevention (PIP) member responsibilities, including implementation of the annual survey to students about their wellbeing; attendance at required PIP meetings; assistance with the Safe and Drug-Free Schools annual review; development and implementation of a strategic plan for preventing and decreasing harmful behaviors with regards to alcohol and other drugs, mental health and suicide, sexual and interpersonal violence, and other wellbeing topics.   • Provide short-termindividual and group counseling, assessment, and crisis intervention services. Provide evidence-based individual-level programming as required by Jefferson College for any students with violations for drugs and alcohol. (C4)
  • Serve as a core member of the Jefferson College Care Team while remaining cognizant of the multiple challenges to the ethical responsibility of confidentiality such service will present. Be highly knowledgeable of the legal responsibility to report individuals at risk of harm to self/others and to maintain strict informational boundaries. May provide mandatory assessment and related services with informed consent of clients, as well as other consultations to campus programs, but must not make or be responsible for admissions, disciplinary, curricular, or other administrative decisions involving students.   • Provide or arrange for the provision of emergency services for students who are experiencing acute emotional distress, are a danger to self or others, or are in need of immediate hospitalization. Such services may be provided by other agencies on campus or in the surrounding community. In such cases, the Director should work closely with other service providers to ensure that the resources are adequate and effectively used and that necessary follow-up care is provided. (C4)
  • Maintain regular communication with the campus community and ensure compliance with confidentiality laws, including but not limited to, HIPAA, FERPA, and Clery. Provide consultation services, as requested, to students, faculty, and staff within the College. Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Committee. (C4)
  • Participate in research and service evaluation activities, including preparation of the annual International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) report and the Student Wellness and Counseling Services annual report. Work closely with the Director of Student Compliance and other key administrators to ensure the accomplishment of institutional goals and objectives. Assist with strategic planning and goal setting; identification and attainment of service objectives; resource allocation; program evaluation and research; counseling; outreach; consultation; and preventive mental health activities. Assist in developing and implementing philosophy, policies, and procedures for student wellness and counseling service operations. (C4)
  • Design and conduct developmental and outreach program activities. Perform other assigned functions that contribute to the service offerings of Student Wellness and Counseling Services and the academic mission of the institution, such as: policy formation, training, committee work, liaison with academic or administrative programs, and participation in Jefferson College program development. (C4)
  • Develop an extensive network of institutional and community relationships. Solid working relationships must be maintained with community medical services and with community mental health services in order to accommodate students who have medical problems or who require more intensive treatment or hospitalization. (C4)
  • Maintain systematic case records as required by professional standards, applicable statutes, etc. The record must include all pertinent clinical documentation, such as: intake and assessment information, case notes, a termination summary, results of any tests or inventories, etc. (B2)
