Jefferson Parish School District is Hiring an Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher Near Louisiana, LA

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide psychomotor assessments and design individualized program of motor development and physical education to special students who cannot participate in regular physical education.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  •  Screen, evaluate and assess handicapped students and document results according to established procedures.
  • Provide adapted physical education services when indicated on a student's individualized educational program.
  • Provide consultation service and technical assistance to parents, teachers, and other personnel concerning instructional modifications or prescriptive activities; provide support service.
  • Participate as a member of the trans-disciplinary team including participation in IEP development, assessments, instructional procedures and curriculum development.
  • Develop a data-based system of documenting the acquisition, maintenance, and generalization of adapted physical education skills.
  • Select and maintain equipment appropriate for the curriculum goals.
  • Maintain appropriate records following state and local school system policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the principal. 

 WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:

  • Work environments include schools, central/regional office, and on occasion community settings.
  • The length of the work day ranges from 6 hrs 50 min to 7 hrs 35 min depending on school assignments (Elementary, Middle, High School).
  • Office days are 7 ½ hours including ½ hour for lunch.
  • Must be able to attend Special Olympics and other athletic programs for students with disabilities.
  • Must provide own transportation to various school sites where assigned. 

 COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  • Must be able to compile data, summarize information and provide written progress and evaluation reports on all students.
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with parents and school personnel regarding the needs of their students.
  • Must have the ability to represent school system at various public functions. 

 EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Audio-visual aids, mobility and positioning equipment (walker, standing box, braces, wheelchairs, abductor blocks, etc.), and micro switches and other communication technology for students with orthopedic impairments. 

 PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Must be able to lift, move, support, restrain, transfer or position students on caseload as needed on their I.E.P. or as needed, in order to access the school campus or community.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to schools, community settings, and office.
  • Must have mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
  • Must be able to swim and obtain necessary certifications if assigned to a school with a pool or swimming program.
  • Must be able to transport and maneuver equipment for instruction. 

 MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisor.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to read evaluations and pertinent data and to interpret information to parents and other school staff for the purpose of formulating educational programs.
  • Must be able to collect valid data to access student's progress.
  • Must have basic knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations regarding students with disabilities.
  • Must have the ability to write IEPs, progress reports, notes to parents, and school records. 

 HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:

  • Must be able to work compatibly in group settings.
  • Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement. 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Bachelor's Degree with Louisiana certification in Adapted Physical Education.
  •  American Red Cross Basic Rescue or Lifesaving Certification if assigned to school with swimming pool. 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The expertise to administer and interpret tests designed to measure psychomotor abilities
