Job Description

Vertex is seeking to hire a Director of Contracting & Pricing Analytics to join the Market Access team within the Commercial organization. This individual has the primary responsibility for the oversight and hands-on management of the contracting and gross-to-net (GTN) analytics function across all payer and channel segments in the United States. This is an exciting, high profile opportunity for an expert in pricing and contracting to develop innovative strategies that assure patient access to equally innovative and transformative rare disease therapies. The ideal candidate is passionate about patients, focused on driving for results, is strategically adept and willing to be involved in hands-on execution.

This individual will lead and provide quantitative and qualitative forecasting and analytical support for contracting, GTN and LRP processes in support of key business decisions. This role will frequently interact with senior Commercial and Vertex leadership and the successful individual must have a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy in creating deliverables, They must be highly self-directed in engaging with stakeholders, while also be able to effectively work in a team-oriented setting.

This role will report to the Executive Director of Market Access Pricing, Analytics and Contract Management and and is a hybrid position based out of Boston, MA (3 days onsite, 2 days flexible).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement data-driven insights and analytics strategies to support market access decisions and GTN optimization.
  • Drive the development of GTN models, forecasting accuracy, and scenario analysis to support pricing decisions and revenue projections for LE and LRP processes.
  • Provide strategic guidance and recommendations to senior leadership based on comprehensive analysis of market access trends, GTN margins, and payer dynamics.
  • Oversee the development, preparation and presentation of accurate and robust reports, dashboards, and KPIs related to GTN performance, market access insights, and reimbursement trends.
  • Develop accurate demand forecasts and optimize gross-to-net implications for inline and pipeline products.
  • Inspire and lead direct reports to provide efficient and robust analyses to support LRP and GTN processes and drive process improvements.
  • Deliver robust quantitative forecast assessments of Market Access inventory days on hand and segment discount mix with clear articulation of the key drivers, sensitivities, risks, and opportunities and materials for quarterly earnings calls
  • Responsible for the strategic and financial evaluation of pricing and contracting recommendations and support of customer negotiations for new and in-line products, including innovative options, where feasible.
  • Provide and present analytics slides for North America (NA) Pricing Committee proposals
  • Provide support for the annual long-range planning (LRP) process, which plays a key role in strategic and tactical planning.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders including but not limited to Market Access, Public Affairs, Commercial Legal, US Sales & Marketing, Global Pricing & Market Access, FP&A, Commercial Sales Operations, Accounting, etc. to ensure transparency and collaboration across key decisions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline required (e.g., Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Finance).
  • 10 years US pharmaceutical industry experience with increasing responsibilities
  • 5 years of experience in developing US pricing, reimbursement and contracting strategies
  • Excellent working knowledge of the GTN data sets and process with the context of evolving US Pricing & Reimbursement dynamics and health system environment for specialty, rare and transformative therapies, such as cell and gene therapies
  • Proficiency in Trade/inventory forecasting
  • Strong analytical capabilities with expertise in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Alteryx, PowerBI, Tableau) and business intelligence platforms.
  • Ability to network across a broad internal and external matrix organization and the skills necessary to form strong, productive partnerships and build consensus and acumen.
  • Strong understanding of payer and distribution channels (commercial, government, SP, GPOs, etc.).
  • Strategic thinker - must be able to see operational trends, and activities and relate their impact to the bigger strategic picture (applying potential legislative changes across the business, understanding GTN drivers and explaining to the business, contracting effects on business, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong presentation skills to C-suite management and external stakeholders.
  • Flexible, adaptable, diplomatic, and able to effectively deal with ambiguity.
  • Ability to influence decision-makers through incisive analysis and persuasive communication, including experience in working with senior leadership to support financial forecasting and analytics, and/or commercial launch planning.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, MPH or a Master’s in a quantitative discipline
  • 10 years in biotech/pharmaceuticals in a quantitative role in Managed Markets / Commercial / Finance / Investment Banking, or 5 years in biopharma consulting (management, strategic or economic consulting) post-MBA/PhD, with meaningful biotech/pharmaceuticals and quantitative decision support experience
  • Highly diverse US product launch experience across different disease areas strongly preferred
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing innovative and value-driven pricing and reimbursement strategies across medical and pharmacy benefit products
  • Contracting strategy implementation experience
  • Experience analyzing large data sets, such as transactional or claims data, using a statistical analysis software package (e.g., SAS or equivalent)
  • Experience working with syndicated Market Access databases (IQVIA Xponent, MMIT etc.)
