Jobs@UIOWA Careers is Hiring a Literary Specialist Near Iowa, IA

The Literary Specialist will provide leadership and oversight for literary and creative initiatives and classes falling under the auspices of the International Writing Program, including programming, editing, assistance during and for IWP’s Fall Residency, Between the Lines, Lines & Spaces, and Distance Learning programs. This position will teach International Literature Today as well as International Translation Workshop and advise on editing and writing-related components within IWP. The Literary Specialist will conceive and oversee interdisciplinary, collaborative literary programming through partnerships across the University of Iowa (Ul) including but not limited to the Iowa City Public Library, WhitmanWeb, The Writing University, Main Library and Special Collections, and other partners. There will be opportunities to conceive, develop, and oversee novel literary, creative, and editorial initiatives.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks 

  • May design, create, develop and evaluate instructional or artistic materials. May evaluate the instructional effectiveness of the strategies and pedagogical/andragogical approaches used.
  • Develop and coordinate novel content and opportunities for participants in IWP programming.
  • Develop curriculum for and teach, or coordinate, IWP courses including IWP: 3191 International Literature Today, and IWP: 5205 International Translation Workshop.
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty, staff in area of specialty. May administer and manage learning management system (ICON).
  • Conceive and oversee program objectives and educational initiatives for the International Writing Program.
  • Manage an instructional support facility (e.g., lab, center, studio), including financial and administrative responsibilities. Support the application of technology within the teaching facility. Operate and maintain complex equipment, requiring specialized knowledge or skills. Assure facilities are in compliance with federal and state regulations pertaining to health and safety.
  • Monitor course enrollments and budget adjustments based on enrollments. Analyze, monitor and report financial data, information and reports.
  • May provide functional and/or administrative supervision. Train and supervise TA's; provide guidance regarding teaching materials and presentations.

Education Requirement

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience in English, comparative literature, journalism, creative writing, communication studies, the humanities, or related field. Significant writing and teaching experience is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Considerable (2-5 years) administrative, program development, teaching, supervisory, writing, and editorial experience is required. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. 
  • Significant writing and teaching experience is required. 

Desired Qualifications

  • A Master 's or doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline is desirable. 
  • Reasonable (1-2 years) public speaking experience and a publication history are desirable. 
  • Experience working in a university setting is desirable.
