Summary:
Radiation Therapists assist in localizing tumors, participate in treatment planning and deliver high doses of ionizing radiation prescribed by radiation oncologist. Radiation therapists are the primary liaison between patients and other members of the radiation oncology team. They also provide a link to other healthcare providers such as social workers and dieticians. The radiation therapist must adhere to Johns Hopkins Hospital policies and procedures, regulatory standards set forth by JCAHO and HIPAA as well as the policies and procedures stated in the Radiation Therapist policy and procedure manual.
Education:
B.S. degree preferred but not required. Graduate of an approved radiation therapy technology program
Licensure/Certifications:
Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy
Current state certification for Medical Radiation Technologist
Experience:
One to three years clinical experience in all modalities as a radiation therapist, through an accredited radiation program
Knowledge/Skills:
Work requires knowledge of department policies and procedures, familiarity with equipment, and proper set‑up of equipment normally acquired through three to six months on-the-job orientation.
Work requires moderate analytical ability to determine proper set‑up of equipment and patient.
Work requires interpersonal skills to deal effectively with Oncology patients for up to eighty percent of work time. Computer skills for treatment machines. Ability to read and interpret patient images and makes correct decisions on such.
