Johnston Community School District is Hiring a Communications Specialist Near Johnston, IA

JOB SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Director of Communications, assists with implementing and coordinating the district’s marketing, communications and media relations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, graphic design, web design, marketing, advertising or related field preferred
  • Minimum of two years’ experience of proven content writing, photography, website work and/or social media experience
  • Prior experience with mass communications platform such as ParentSquare, Blackboard, Constant Contact or iContact preferred
  • Prior experience in an education setting preferred
  • Creative mindset and attention to detail

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates, posts and shares news stories, announcements, photos and graphics for the school district website and social media pages
  • Manages website to ensure content and links are current and accurate
  • Drafts district communications to internal or external stakeholders as needed
  • Takes photos and videos at district events
  • Reviews, proofs and edits all communications and content for accuracy before sharing
  • Collaborates with administrators and web developer regarding website issues and redesign as needed
  • Follows district guidelines, board policy and state law in communications-related actions taken and decisions made
  • Designs flyers, posters, and other marketing materials and advertisements as requested
  • Develops promotional graphics and PowerPoints for events and presentations
  • Collaborates with director to coordinate coverage of events, announcements and notifications
  • Ensures consistency of overall image to maintain brand identity
  • Reviews and publishes submissions to the Digital Backpack
  • Assists with logo design requests and approvals
  • Assists with district e-newsletter
  • Helps to manage and fulfill public records requests according to state open records law
  • Learns how to use ParentSquare as a District Admin, and helps to provides customer service and support for the platform
  • Completes all required training

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Engages in professional development related to functions and responsibilities
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Proficient in computer applications including WordPress, Canva, Google (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms) and Microsoft Suite
  • Proficient in social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and X
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced writing, photography, videography and website skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and problem solve with minimal supervision and direction
  • Ability to adhere to the district’s style guide and produce high quality, error-free copy
  • Ability to contribute to creating and maintaining a positive work environment
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
