FLSA Classification: Non Exempt, Part Time

Salary Range: $15 - $17/hr DOQ

Reports to: Recreation Superintendent

Date: June 2024

Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Superintendent and Preschool Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher is responsible for all planning, implementation and supervision of the day-to-day activities for the preschool students. Preschool Teachers are directly responsible for supervising children and providing a safe and educational environment for students. This position requires the ability to manage a classroom, demonstrate leadership, and initiative to establish a well-rounded learning environment.

Essential Duties

  • Planning and supervision of programs and activities.
  • Interact with the children and to encourage their involvement in varied appropriate activities.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized environment for children to learn and grow.
  • Develop lesson plans based on the curriculum outline.
  • Prepare materials and classroom for class activities.
  • Provide a variety of activities and materials age appropriate and relevant to young children.
  • Keep daily attendance records of all children enrolled.
  • Assess and evaluate children’s abilities including knowledge and any limitations. If any limitations or barriers were found, give suggestions to parents.
  • Hold Parent/Teacher Conferences.
  • Observe, record and report significant negative individual and group behavior.
  • Use appropriate and positive discipline when necessary.
  • Maintain necessary classroom materials and school materials.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Continue education through workshops, webinars, and continuing education classes.
  • Design and put up decorations on bulletin boards, hallways, and classrooms.
  • Arrive and depart on time.
  • Communicate and work together with other staff to lesson plan, execute classroom duties, and work special events.
  • Plan, prepare, set up, and facilitate special events.
  • Maintain good public relations with parents and the public by being an enthusiastic supporter of the Joliet Park District.
  • Assist with outside curbside drop off and pick up of preschool students
  • Complete any other tasks or duties as assigned by the Recreation Superintendent or Preschool Supervisor.

Hours

Work shifts will vary based on class and enrollment. There may be evening or weekend hours due to special events. This position runs August through May.

Work Environment

This position will occur mostly in an indoor, temperature controlled setting. Position will occasionally work outdoors in various weather elements, ie cold, heat, rain, snow, etc. Most work performed is in a busy, close and at times, noisy environment where interruptions prevail.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; bend; kneel; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear; taste and smell; and carry materials. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Prior education or experience in a preschool or classroom setting preferred.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • CPR certified or obtained upon hire
  • Complete First Aid Training.
  • Successful completion of DCFS Mandated Reporter Training.
  • Successful completion of Gateways’ Early Childhood Education Credential Level 1.
