Kent School District is Hiring a Groundskeeper - MT2144 Near Kent, WA

This position is 7:30 am - 4:00 pm 8hrs/12months and part of the AFT bargaining union.

JOB DESCRIPTION - GROUNDSKEEPER

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is to maintain district grounds and irrigation systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Operates efficiently and safely reel and rotary mowers, power edgers, spreaders, and tractors with implements.

Maintains all lawns, fields, wetlands, bio-swale and retention ponds in accordance with federal, state, county, and city codes and district standards.

Prunes, fertilizes, sprays, and cares for shrubs and trees, flowerbeds, and planters.

Performs manual weeding, sweeping, and brush, trash, and stone removal.

Makes repairs to asphalt and concrete surfaces, fences, and playground equipment.

Removes snow from sidewalks and drives.

Maintains assigned equipment.

Maintains a routine weekly mowing schedule with little supervision.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

Perform other tasks not requiring journey-level qualifications or special training or experience.

Serves as member of the maintenance team of the school district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Works under the direction of the Team Lead to whom they are assigned, and works closely with the other Maintenance Team members, Capitol Planning staff, site custodial staff. and site administration in coordinating and performing fieldwork.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The daily work is performed both inside and outside the buildings and on the building’s grounds. The work requires walking two to six miles a day. The work at times will be performed during night and adverse weather conditions in hot, cold, rainy, and snowy environments. The work is of a manual nature and requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, stand for long periods of time, twist, reach, push, and pull, and use far and near visual acuity. At times the work is of a strenuous nature and the employee must be able to lift or pack weights up to 50 pounds unassisted to shoulder height using proper personal lifting procedures. Weights over 50 pounds will be lifted with proper safety equipment and assistance. The work requires the employee to work around asbestos, chemicals, hazardous materials, fumes, paints, dusts, electrical and mechanical equipment, confined space, and fluid hazards, which requires the employee to follow all proper federal, state, and local codes, safety policies and procedures, and SDS data information and to wear proper personal protection equipment. Work requires adherence to established dress guidelines, which includes provisions for safety. An employee may be required to work overtime or other shifts on short notice. Some positions may be required to work a swing shift or modified day shift. Regular attendance is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must demonstrate a successful level of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Knowledge of grounds keeping practices, methods, and techniques.

Knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining grounds.

Knowledge of electronic communication, computerized work order system, and Windows.

Knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to grounds keeping work.

Some knowledge of irrigation systems.

Ability to maintain and monitor work related records.

Ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment used in performing grounds keeping duties.

Ability to work in various weather conditions.

Ability to work well in a team environment.

Ability to learn and follow proper safety precautions and procedures applicable to the work.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Skill in the use and operation and of tools and equipment.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and four years’ experience performing grounds keeping work, including the operation of commercial mowing equipment and using common hand and power tools; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work.

Licensing and Certification

Valid Washington State driver’s license.

Valid Washington State pesticide application license or ability to obtain a license within the six-month probationary period.

Evaluation responsibilities are assigned to the Maintenance Supervisor.
