Position Description

Summary: The Director of Facilities is a working member of the maintenance and housekeeping team and as such will share an appropriate portion of the work load alongside their fellow team members. In addition, the Director of Facilities supervises, coordinates and monitors the work activity of the Maintenance and Housekeeping Departments; develops program goals and objectives; prepares or assists in the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets; recommends and evaluates personnel actions. The Director of Facilities must enthusiastically support the University’s mission to engage students in a transformative educational experience that equips them as effective Christian professionals providing servant leadership for the church and society, while also ensuring the overall department is similarly oriented.

Reporting Relationship

The Director of Facilities reports administratively to the Vice President of Business Operations. The Director of Facilities works closely with all other operational units across campus.

Qualification Standards:

Education: A four-year degree is preferred. Great emphasis will be placed on the need for demonstrated success in the candidate’s work history and a well-rounded background.

Experience: Five to ten years of broad technical experience. Three to five years of experience in managing personnel and complex activities. These experiences should include a minimum of two years in operations management. Preference will be given to KCU Alumni.

The Director of Facilities must possess a strong customer service orientation, with the primary customers of the unit being the students, faculty, and staff of the University. The Director must possess the ability to “see the campus through the eyes of its customers,” and must maintain this high standard for all operations staff.

  • Full-time, salary-exempt position. Hours: M-F 8:00 – 5:00 (with some evenings and weekend hours required and subject to 24 hours on call)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and coordinate programs and actions: Supervise the department with responsibility for planning, coordination, and controlling the work and procedures; develop cost reduction projects and targets in collaboration with subordinate employees; conducts selection interviews to evaluate qualifications of applicants; oversee the Energy Management operations; inform and advise employees about personnel actions; coordinate the activities to enhance the unity of operations.
  • Planning and budgeting: Prepare an annual operating budget for the Maintenance and Housekeeping Department, including direct labor, material and supplies, services, equipment maintenance and replacement; develop and keep updated the Long-range Maintenance Plan; develop department goals and objectives, based on interpretation of institutional policies and goals; evaluate organizational functions and structures to best determine the allocation and utilization of resources; evaluate workload, priorities, and activity schedules to determine staffing requirements; meet with Director of Business to inform of departmental progress, problems and concerns; develop department work goals and objectives, based on analysis of long and short range plans; analyze situations/incidents.
  • Grant Opportunities: The Director of Facilities is responsible for identifying grant initiatives that directly benefit the facilities department and to relay this information to the VP of Business Operations and CFO.
  • Personnel administration: Recommend personnel actions, including hiring, promotion, and termination; interpret personnel practices and policies in response to questions from employees; counsel employees with regard to disciplinary actions taken in response to violations of institutional policies.
  • Review and evaluation: Monitor projects assigned to others; meet with department personnel to distribute information gained from operational meetings; conduct staff meetings to develop resolutions to problems, plan to achieve goals or establish priorities.
  • Maintain and comply with all policies, rules, and regulations included in the KCU Staff Handbook.
  • Carry out additional duties as required or assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • May be required to serve on a special taskforce or committees.
