The Kenyon Review is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to serve as the Director of Operations. The Director of Operations at The Kenyon Review is a full-time position responsible for overseeing the operations of the organization, with particular attention to subscription fulfillment and fiduciary management and reporting. While many duties listed below are specific, the Director of Operations works collaboratively with the Managing Editor. The position reports to the Editor of The Kenyon Review.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the financial aspects of the organization including budgeting, daily accounting, and reporting.
  • Serve as liaison to The Kenyon Review Board of Trustees and its Finance Committee. Prepare all written finance report materials for meetings.
  • Prepare financial reports for foundation applications.
  • Assist the Programs Staff as necessary with Summer Programs, especially as regards budgeting, invoices, and database maintenance. Work closely with the Programs staff to budget for new workshops/programs as needed.
  • Oversee Gift acknowledgement process, including monthly reconciling and twice annual appeal mailing.
  • Provide Subscription Management: Maintain subscriber database; send and update paper and electronic renewal notices; partner with fulfillment vendors for shipping and handling of current and new issues and liaison with agencies for rates and claims; prepare annual postal statement.
  • Work with the Operations Assistant to implement, maintain and evaluate the information systems used by the organization for essential data warehousing, subscriptions tracking and fulfillment, submissions, and mailings.
  • Design, implement, and train staff in the use of project management software: Monday.com.
  • Assist the Editor and Managing Editor in short-term and long-term strategic organizational planning, with a special focus on market research strategies and readership surveys.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Editor on marketing strategies for circulation growth; maintain and share circulation data and metrics.
  • Regularly update and maintain Constant Contact email lists.
  • Oversee office communications including management of the main Kenyon Review email and phone line.
  • Represent the organization at key conferences and events.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsible for supervising one part-time staff member and one student intern. Supervision includes establishing schedules, performing quarterly performance reviews and ensuring a productive, enjoyable environment for reports. Those positions reporting directly to the Director of Operations of The Kenyon Review are:

  • Operations Assistant
  • Student Office Intern
