HVAC Engineer (Mechanical)

Role Purpose:

Responsible for overall performance of rolling stock HVAC through monitoring HVAC performance, measuring and tracking HVAC performance trends, participating in hands-on troubleshooting with maintenance personnel, developing and writing associated work procedures, and developing engineered solutions to HVAC related problems on rolling stock.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HVAC, Mechanical or electrical engineering preferred
  • Proven ability as a strong team leader to motivate the HVAC team to develop innovative solutions by sharing industry and engineering knowledge.
  • Demonstrated capability to influence, negotiate and facilitate buy-in with a variety of stakeholders, including labor organizations.
  • Key personal traits; collaborative, forward thinking, proactive, resilient, sound judgement, innovative.
  • Leverage engineering knowledge to drive operational excellence within Mechanical and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC systems
  • Familiar with railroad equipment, planned preventative maintenance activities, performance improvement processes
  • Working knowledge with APTA, AAR and CFR 49 parts 229 and 238

Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Exceptional planning, organization and time management skills
  • Ability to manage and mentor technical personnel.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make decisions for optimal results
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of tasks and assignments
  • Communication skills at interpersonal and all group levels.
  • Ability to build trust in relationships.
  • Methods and tools for performance optimization.

Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):

HVAC Maintenance and Reliability:

  • Ownership of the maintenance plan for HVAC across the coach and locomotive fleets.
  • Includes continuous review and optimization to ensure year-round reliable performance of HVAC 
  • Provide technical expertise to support the Mechanical department with respect to HVAC.
  • Lead technical investigations into mechanical/electrical failures involving HVAC and ensure any actions identified are followed up and closed out.

HVAC overhauls and modifications:

  • Responsible for the identification of modifications, preparation of appropriate business cases and gaining financial support for their implementation in a timely manner to meet operational safety, performance targets and time scales. 
  • Manage HVAC related Engineering Change activities to ensure they deliver cost effective, compliant solutions while maintaining full control of HVAC configuration.
  • Work with the Technical Team and MBTA to develop prototypes and oversee first of class installs.

HVAC Related Training:

  • Support the training department in the development of training courses and materials for craft employees undertaking work on HVAC.

Coach Materials:

  • Support the materials team to investigate vendor quality issues, manage obsolescence, manage the warranty process, and provide standards for materials to be procured against, such as overhaul instructions.
  • Collaborate with Materials to reduce material related maintenance delays

General Requirements:

  • Demonstrate understanding and adhere to the KCS principles of Operational Excellence & Safety, Employee Engagement, Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Social Responsibility and Economic Performance.
  • Document key processes to ensure they are consistently delivered and there is no uncertainty about the scope of work that is required.
  • Support the delivery of Keolis and MBTA Projects as directed.
  • Support other members of the Technical Team as required.
  • Comply with all safety rules and procedures and report all hazards as required.
  • Plan for and direct operations during service disruptions and periods of extreme weather to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):

  • This role is primarily Monday – Friday Day Shift but may require occasional overnight or weekend support.
  • There is a mixture of office work and on equipment troubleshooting.
  • Frequent travel to Commuter Rail locations other than BET is expected.
