Job Duties:

· Each custodian must be physically able to perform the duties listed below.

o 1. Providing comfort by maintaining proper room temperatures, and keeping the building ventilated and lighted.

o 2. Preventing slick floors, ramps, and steps.

o 3. Keeping obstructions out of passageways.

o 4. Removing protruding nails and splinters from furniture.

o 5. Keeping playground and other equipment in safe condition.

o 6. Keeping sidewalks free of snow and hazardous materials.

o 7. Keeping all exit doors unlocked and/or free.

o 8. Inspecting daily for fire hazards and making necessary corrections.

o 9. Following good housekeeping practices in all areas of the school under the custodian’s jurisdiction; Shower, locker rooms, and lavatories to which the custodian is assigned must be cleaned and disinfected each day and towels, toilet tissue, and soap checked daily. Corridors to which the custodian is assigned must be swept and kept clean. Entrances and walks to which the custodian is assigned should be shoveled by the time students come to school, and ice must be removed or chemically treated to reduce slipperiness.

o 10. Custodians who maintain the lunchroom will assist in storing and handling heavy packaged items and containers and will dispose of all waste and garbage.

o 11. Checking fire extinguishers in each area of responsibility on a monthly basis.

o 12. Keeping all premises clean, free from rodents, vermin, and other pests which endanger health.

o 13. Providing proper care of buildings, sites, furniture, and various kinds of equipment, supplies, and instructional materials.

o 14. Providing daily maintenance and repairs as needed.

o 15. Knowing the kind and amount of supplies to use as well as the correct methods of using them. All needed supplies and materials shall be requested through the Superintendent.

o 16. Reporting unusually messy conditions created by students or staff to the principal.

o 17. Complying with all district policies applicable to custodial positions as determined by the Superintendent.

o 18. Performing other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or building principals.

Additional Requirements

o At least one custodian or cleaning person shall be available at all times that the building is occupied unless instructed otherwise by the Superintendent.

o Under no conditions should the custodian attempt to exercise disciplinary control over students. If this rule is violated, staff or students should report this infraction to the principal.

o If the custodian finds it necessary to leave the building during the period of his regularly assigned work, s/he must notify the building principal or Superintendent first.

o School doors must be unlocked between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and the Superintendent or building principal shall designate which custodians are charged with this responsibility. Each custodian shall be responsible for turning off the lights and locking the doors when s/he leaves unless the rooms are still in use. The teacher in charge of students must be responsible for building security after the custodian cleans the area in which the teacher and students are working.
