Incumbent is a working supervisor within the clinic. Shares day-to-day responsibilities with the Practice Manger to supervise technical staff. Handles issues as regards to customer service, service to practitioners, problem solving, registration issues and patient financial services. Demonstrates the highest degree of proficiency in use of all equipment and performance of technical ophthalmic procedures. Performs preliminary examinations, including recording patient history, testing visual acuity, iIntra-ocular pressure, neutralizing current lenses with the lensometer, automated and simple manifest refractions, and screening color tests. Performs special tests based on physicians' orders including keratometer readings, visual fields, GDX, topography, and axial length measurements. Triages patient and pharmacy telephone calls and prescription refills, intervening with physicians as appropriate. In conjunction with the Manager, coordinates front and back office operations and scheduling to maximize patient and office flow and assists in assessing training needs of staff.

  • Supervision: Acts as a coach and positive role model for staff by establishing and maintaining a safe work environment that fosters positive morale. Appropriately monitors and addresses performance issues, applying corrective or disciplinary action when needed. Effectively manages staff in compliance with applicable labor union agreement, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines. Ensures effective staffing levels, and handles recruitment and selection for unit. Effectively handles leave and disability issues, including accommodation and return to work issues. Completes performance evaluations in a timely, accurate manner. 20%
  • Follows and enforces department and organizational rules, ensuring consistent application. Ensures employee accountability to schedule expectations, including breaks, lunches, meetings, and other events, making every effort to maximize productivity. 10%
  • Coordinates and schedules training for team members, including new employee orientation / training. Provides supplemental training to staff as requested or needed. Determines need for cross training, develops cross training plans, and assigns peer instructor as needed. 10%
  • Consistently demonstrates an advanced level of clinical expertise and enhanced communication skills. Able to guide and/or instruct other ophthalmic personnel in procedures, use of equipment and able to perform all tests and patient work ups in order for MDs or Orthoptists to diagnose patients. Demonstrates critical thinking skills to problem solve and communicate with physicians on clinical issues. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of infection control techniques. 35%
  • Conducts routine service and work product reviews. Provides timely feedback and coaching to staff on results. Evaluates employees accuracy in gathering and entering the information into appropriate computer system. Takes necessary steps to protect patient confidentiality. 15%
  • Acts as a clinical resource to staff in the use of equipment, providing in-services, validating competencies and advising management on training needs 10%

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels
  • Understanding of JCAHO requirements
  • Previous experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Must have two years experience in ambulatory ophthalmology setting
  • Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of infection control techniques
  • Current COA/COT credentials
  • Current BLS certification
  • Critical thinking skills to problem solve and communicate with physicians on clinical issues
  • Able to perform all tests and patient work ups in order for MDs or Orthoptist to diagnose patient problem
  • Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment
  • Ability to guide and/or instruct other ophthalmic personnel in procedures and use of equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory experience in ophthalmology outpatient setting
  • Previous management experience in a health care setting
