Summary

  • JOB SUMMARY
      A Sleep Trainee develops competency in and performs basic sleep testing procedures and associated interventions. The sleep trainee works under the direct supervision of a sleep technician or a sleep technologist.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Verify the medical order and protocol.
    • Complete and verify documentation.
    • Explain the procedure and orient the patient to the sleep center.
    • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
    • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
    • Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals.
    • Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
      Follow procedural protocols [to ensure collection of appropriate data.
    • Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify and report signal abnormalities.
    • Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
    • Assist with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
    • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
    • Comply with the Sleep Lab and professional association's Standards of Conduct.
    • Ensure ongoing Sleep Lab compliance with all laws and regulations; ensure that the Sleep Lab meets or exceeds accreditation standards; and implement ‘’best practices’’ in all departmental activities.
    • Participate in surveys conducted by authorized inspection agencies.
      Participate in the Sleep Lab’s Performance Improvement program as requested by the Performance Improvement Coordinator.
    • Direct and participate in Sleep Lab committees when requested.
      Pursue continuing education programs appropriate to job responsibilities.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor.
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
      Minimum requirement:
      • High school diploma or GED
      • Certified in Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association Health Care Provider.
      • Computer skills that include word processing, and efficient use of the internet and e-mail.
      • Demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills.
        Demonstrate appropriate social skills.
      • Must obtain Sleep Lab Technologist certification within 18 months of start.
      Preferred qualifications:
      • Six months of direct patient care experience
      • One year of postsecondary education
      • Completion of the 80-Hour Introductory Course (A-STEP) Sleep Education Program
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
    • Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
